Khaled Hosseini claims that in his novel, The Kite Runner, Baba betrayed Amir by choosing to favor his appearance in Afghan society, thus leading to Amir's guiltiness in Hassan’s death as shown by how Baba hid the truth of Amir and Hassan being brothers and Baba’s improper way of showing love. Amir reveals Baba’s project on an orphanage that he had designed himself. Amir had “ remembered the day before the orphanage opened, Baba took me to Ghargha Lake” and was asked to “fetch Hassan too, but [he] lied and told him Hassan had the runs. [he] [wanted] Baba all to [himself]... [since] Hassan made his stone skip eight times... [and] Baba was there, watching, and patted Hassan on the back. Amir wants “Baba all to himself” because Amir is jealous of the relationship between Baba and Hassan as he skipped his stone more times than Amir, thus getting a pat on the back and Baba’s shoulder around him. Creating the imbalance of Baba’s expression of love causes Amir to mistreat Hassan as “he lied that Hassan had the runs” further adding to his greediness to have Baba to himself.
