How two minor characters affect Callum McGregor Everyone has been influenced before in good and bad ways. Especially, Callum McGregor from the adventure and romantic novel Noughts and Crosses, written in 2001 by Malorie Blackman. Callum is influenced by his mother and brother, which led to bad things such as his role in the Liberation Militia, and joining a school which only caused problems for him. Jude McGregor, Callum’s older, brother influenced Callum through a hateful relationship, the grief of the passing of Callum’s father, and the hanging of Callum. Say that again and I’ll knock you flat. . .” This shows that Jude despises crosses and that he may be trying to change Callums opinion on crosses considering what they've done to Lynette (32 -33). A couple chapters after this, Ryan Mcgregor, father of Callum and Jude is supposedly electrocuted whilst trying to scale an electrified fence at the Hewmett prison. Jude finds Callum after this event takes place at a burger bar and Jude says to Callum “[he knows] all about that. And it’s payback time.” when Callum informs Jude that Ryan passed away in prison. Then Jude says “This is your chance to make a difference.” This is a major influence to Callum joining the Liberation militia because Callum always said he has wanted to make a difference, and this is his chance. (318 -319). After Callum joins the Liberation Militia, Jude gets Callum to “prove his loyalty” to the L.M by kidnapping childhood friend Persephone Hadley knowing that Persephone will definitely come visit Callum when she gets the chance. The kidnapping is successful and on the drive back to the safehouse, Jude congratulates Callum, Callum replies with “Don’t ever question my loyalty ever again.” This proves that Callum has changed because before, Callum would never want to hurt …show more content…

Callum’s mom values Callum’s education in highschool because it wasn’t any ordinary highschool, it was a cross only highschool until the school had to invite a handful of noughts into the school, one being Callum. Callum’s mom said “I just wanted to say that whatever happens tomorrow, well done for getting into heathcroft high school.” (47) Meggie is happy that Callum got into heathcroft since this is his chance to change the world through getting a good education then getting a good job which could lead into inspiring other noughts to do the same and maybe change the perspective the crosses look at the noughts by. Later on in the book Meggie finds that Ryan and Jude are possibly members of the liberation militia and the bombers at the dundale shopping centre. She gets really mad and says “You killed, you murdered all those people.”(203) while she said that she is yelling at Jude and Ryan trying to find out who planted the bomb. This shows that she feels anger against the planter or planters of the bomb, and if she’s angry against the liberation militia that must mean that she believes that they have done the wrong thing, thus leading into her mentality
