Philosophy causes a great amount of confusion to people, especially when asked to define it. Many philosophers throughout the years have brought about many different definitions. For example Kant said it is “the principles of the rational cognition of things by means of concepts”; Heidegger on the other hand said it was the “guardian of reason”. Yet they were never able to come into accordance on what it exactly means. If asked to define, what is philosophy? I would say it is the “answer” to all questions, which facts have not been able to solve. Take the following question into consideration: “How do active Galactic Nuclei form and evolve?” A scientist will easily answer that question using scientific facts, which have demonstrated how Galactic Nuclei form and evolve. Now ask yourself these questions: “What is Logic” or “What is reality?” There is no amount of facts that could provide a concrete on what these actually are. That is Philosophy. …show more content…
Philosophy itself does not tell us what we need to believe, but has us question our existence and why things are the way they are? It keeps us thinking. Without noticing we do it on a daily basis, we continuously ask ourselves questions like “What is success?” and “How much success is necessary in order to acquire happiness?” that on the other hand encourages us to find an answer for these questions. In the hunt for the answer we acquire a great amount of success, which was merely achieved through curiosity. That is a brief example on how a philosophical question can help to live a better life. Philosophy is what lets us add meaning to life and not just see it as something meaningless and boring. Philosophy helps us live a better by opening our minds to experiencing new
Modern sciences have either directly emerged from philosophy or are very closely related to multiple philosophical questions. Understanding philosophy, as well as the way problems are addressed by philosophers, is the key to understanding science as we know it today and in the future. There are as many definitions of philosophy as there are philosophers – perhaps there are even more. Philosophy is said to be the mother of all disciplines. It is also the oldest of all disciplines and has given a rise to modern science, both social and natural conclusions. After three millennia of philosophical discourse and disagreement, it is extremely unlikely that we will reach an exact consensus. My thoughts are that a philosopher is basically a person who engages in the critical study of the basic principles and concepts of a particular branch of knowledge, especially with the intention of improving or reconstituting them; this is otherwise known as the study of philosophy.
...themselves struggling to describe what the actual definition of philosophy. The main problem to describe the philosophy is not because there are a lot of sub-discipline component list. The main problem to describe the meaning of philosophy is when combine all of the sub-discipline to become one discipline. (Rosenberg, 2012). There are four mains classification of philosophy assumption, they are; ontology, epistemology and axiology (McClean, 2012).
A philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, existence. There is a multitude of philosophies that one can believe in. Each philosophy teaches its followers a set of beliefs, morals, and traditions that determine the way its followers should live. Followers of every philosophy stick together in a society as one big family. They watch over each other just like family, and in any family there's always a “head of the family” who is looked upon. Throughout the major literary philosophies in the United States, one can see how a role model is looked up to throughout philosophy's history.
At the heart of philosophy is philosophical argument. Arguments are different from assertions. Assertions are simply stated; arguments always involve giving reasons. An argument is a reasoned inference from one set of claims – the premises – to another claim – the conclusion. The premises provide reasons to believe that the conclusion is true. If the premises are true, the conclusion is more likely to be true. Arguments seek to ‘preserve truth’ – true premises will lead to a true conclusion. It is worth knowing a little bit more about arguments straightaway.
The Problem people have with philosophy is the lack of definite answers. This is not to say that philosophy has never produced any. Russell
Interest in philosophy is a skill that young ones should posses so that they will learn to become more active in life. By learning philosophy, they begin to learn why people do things and different theories of how the world and the universe work. Philosophers help us to portrait different roles related in present situation.
The term “philosophy” means the love of wisdom, and those that study philosophy attempt to gain knowledge through rationality and reason. 1 Socrates, the father of ancient philosophy, once stated “the unexamined life is not worth living”. This is the most important part of life and it is need to find purpose and value in life. If a person chooses to live their life without examination, their life would lack value and they would be unhappy. They would also be ignorant to the effects of their choices on themselves and the people around them.
Philosophy makes up a portion of the great books collection that are found all over the world. Philosophy is one of the more popular literature subjects that helps readers reconsider what they already know and do a lot of critical thinking. Also not all that philosophers believe has to be possible or true because the whole purpose is to try and evaluate knowledge, reality, life, nature, etc. and question how or if it truly exists. Not very many philosophers refer to science when they are assessing why objects and materials exist, but one philosopher in particular, Rene Descartes, does just this. Particularly, when referring to one of his key texts of Western philosophy, Meditations on First Philosophy. Descartes takes a very mechanistic view
Is the use of philosophical thinking, teaching, and argumentation useful? Philosophy has been taught for millennia, and has been very influential over the course of human history. Because of its quasi perpetuity, it would not be a radical idea to assume that philosophy has its uses. I would agree with this conjecture; philosophy is useful in many different ways. Philosophy is useful because it helps us understand what we do and do not know; it draws a line between having actual knowledge and having ignorance, allowing us to recompose what we thought we knew into actual knowing. Philosophy also allows us to comprehend the way we perceive the world and recognize that one individual’s theory of reality is different compared to anyone else’s, because of the different prejudices, experiences, or beliefs that one might have.
What is philosophy is the question to ask the modern world. To understand the logic of humans and the world ancestors, philosophy is the study of reasoning the logic in attempt to understand reality and fundamental questions about knowledge, morality, life and human nature. The ancient Greeks were among the first to practice philosophy and defined the terms and meaning of love of wisdom. For whom study philosophy are the ones who are called philosophers. Throughout the ages, philosophers have seeked to answer questions based on the meaning and purpose behind life, how do we know what we know, What does it mean to possess consciousness, God exist, and what is the value of human morals.
Personally, I define philosophy as a study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, existence and the theory or attitude acting as a guiding principle for behaviour. Therefore, I disagree with this statement as philosophy is not just about a deep expression of our wonders and the search for understanding and knowledge. Philosophy broadens our imagination and allows individuals to actively engage and critically think about the wider world. Every individual has different thoughts, values, reasons, language and understanding of the philosophical world we live in. Hence, Philosophy is a comprehensive system of ideas about human nature and the nature of reality. Philosophy is also known as a collective group of ideas and principles of existence
What is philosophy? It is the attempt to reason well about certain traditional domains of study: logic (the study of good reasoning), epistemology (the study of knowledge), metaphysics (the study of reality), and ethics (the study of morality). Just like science, some philosophy is better than others, and a lot of philosophy done by amateurs misses the mark so badly that it is often better described as something else entirely. When
My philosophy will help to make me a better person. I will value other people 's opinions and I will listen to them. By thinking about how my choices will effect other people, I will be less likely to offend people. People will think of me as someone who has things figured out so they will be more likely to ask me for advice. I would like my life philosophy to not only help me to be a better person, but to help those around me too. I want to have a positive impact on the world by influencing others to be more like Jesus. By doing this, I will feel better about my decisions. When I think before acting, I am more confident in my decisions and I become more informed about those choices. When I think about the effects that my choices have on people, I am being more loving, which will add to the confidence I will gain when making good decisions. The confidence I gain will carry over to other areas of my life and make me more confident in
In general, philosophy of life is a statement that is used as a yardstick in making decisions throughout one’s life. This statement helps someone in achieving goals, choosing a career, becoming a better person in life and so on. It is this statement that patterns and direct one’s life. Philosophy as a subject can be simply defined as the study of reality and knowledge. Although there are more to philosophy than just reality and knowledge. It is very easy to chase shadow or illusion based on one’s ignorance. If there is no proper knowledge, a wrong philosophy of life might be set. Since one’s philosophy of life is like a compass that direct the direction of one’s life, it is imperative to have a good statement else, many things may go wrong, and one may be chasing shadows instead of
Philosophy is arguably the key to how humans have learned to create what society has become today. Throughout history, many philosophers argued about issues like religion, morality, language, politics, and just about anything you can think of. Philosophy has effected everyone for thousands of years, so it is likely that Philosophy has the ability to both benefit and set a disadvantage at some point. Though it all depends on the person that it is effecting. For example, philosophy can prove to be a disadvantage to one person when they are forced to think about new ideas, meanwhile it can be highly beneficial to the person that is implementing the new ideas simply because they are broadening their mind and possibly striving toward a more prosperous
