Native American’s were negatively affected by westward expansion after the civil war from the extinction of the Buffalo, loss of native lands and assimilation. According to Document D, the population of Buffalo decreased from 30 million to extinct in the years between 1800-1889. Buffalo were the center of Native American culture, as tribes used every part of the body of the dead buffalo to produce many tools. As westward expansion began to increase, many sacred lands were taken from Native American tribes. Resulting in many disputes between settlers and Native Americans, leading to battles including the Sand Creek Massacre, The Battle of Wounded Knee and more. These conflicts lead into the process of assimilation, where many Native Americans gave up their native ways in order to escape conflict and death. …show more content…
