Shakespeare saved the life of an inmate, both literally and figuratively. When Bates knocked on Larry's cell door, his life had been so desolate that he was literally at the point of suicide. Shakespeare's sonnets brought something positive in Larry's life and gave him a new direction. Shakespeare literally saved him from taking his own life. Figuratively, Shakespeare unlocked Larry's mind by giving him a new positive way of looking at life.
