The Jim Crow laws were a series of laws passed in southern states from the 1880s to the 1960s that limited the rights and freedoms of African-Americans. They were put into place after slavery was abolished, because southerners could not stand the fact of having African-Americans as their equals. Southerners then passed the Jim Crow laws. For example, African-Americans could not be seen by white nurses in hospitals in Alabama. In Florida, all marriages between a white person and a negro, or between a white person of negro descent to the fourth generation inclusive, are hereby prohibited. These laws and laws like these were abolished in the 1960s from from states including Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee, and Arizona.- Matt People in the 1950’s were not treated with the respect they are today. Thus, Martin Luther King’s dream of freedom and equality for mankind did transpire, however it came its limitations. One brave individual who stands out during these unjust times of segregation is Rosa Parks. With her audacious actions and complete serenity, she sparked a nation. By courageously refusing to conform to racial laws, Rosa Parks aided in the achievement of integration. Although racism still exists in the world, without Rosa Park’s courage, maybe blacks and whites would still sit on the opposite sides of a bus. -Stephanie Schille …show more content…

Maya Angelou, for example, won numerous awards for her poetry. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words inspired thousands of people to protest racial inequality. Oprah Winfrey overcame troubles of her past and used her experience to make a change in other people’s lives. Booker T. Washington, born into slavery, managed to fight for education for African Americans. All these people, and more, have achieved great success and were able to impact the world.
