“You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it’s right,” –Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks, do we all just remember her as the women who stood up in the bus? This is an understatement to the powerful act she took that day on December 1, 1955 and it’s a day that will be remembered forever. Born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama, she was raised around a lot of racial discrimination. After her parents separated, she moved to Pine Level, Alabama, where went to an old segregated one-room school. African-Americans were required to walk to school while white students get a school bus and attended school in a new building. Ads and flyers were spread to black communities convincing them not to use the bus on the day of Rosa’s trial and this came to be known as “The Montgomery Bus Boycott.” It was a huge success as 40 000 African-American commuters walked that day to work. As a result, black churches were burned and both Martin Luther King Jr.’s and E.D. Nixon’s homes were destroyed by the bombings. The black community took legal action and on June 1956, the district court declared racial segregation laws unconstitutional and the boycott officially ended on December 20, 1056. However, after this situation, Rosa lost her job and her husband also got fired causing them to move to Detroit, Michigan. October 24, 2004, Rosa died at the age of 92 and 50 000 people came to view her casket and pay respect to her. She had many accomplishments such as getting a commemorative U.S stamp named after her called the “Rosa Parks Forever.” President Barak Obama unveiled a statue honouring her in the nation’s capital building. She was awarded two dozen honorary doctorates from universities all over the world, she was put into Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame for her achievement in civil rights in 1983 and she was also able to publish two books telling her
