Between the years 1760-1820, the Industrial Revolution took place in Great Britain. This was a transforming time in the course of our world. It allowed machines to complete the jobs that humans had done for centuries. Over the years, inventors rose and created machines and inventions that helped transform the Industrial Revolution. One famous inventor went by the name of James Watt.
James Watt was born in Greenock, Scotland on January 19, 1736. He was homeschooled by his educated mother. His father’s business was run out of their backyard and it quickly expanded. Watt quickly realized how inefficient the Newcomen model was. For several years, this well-known invention had been used to pump water out of mines. Since there were no design improvements in recent years, Watt took it upon himself. With his improvements on the machine, he was able to increase the power and make it more fuel efficient. One of Watt’s biggest problems was his overwhelming debt. In order to escape from debt, and obtain his first patent, Watt had to give up part of his product’s equity. This might not have been easy, but it was his only option if he wanted to continue to create this machine. With his first patent in hand, Watt spent the next six months working in secret to create a workable model. In 1772, Watt’s wife dies in childbirth. This puts him at another low part in his life. Miraculously, James meets Matthew Boulton who was a Birmingham-based businessman. Together, the two manufacture James’s steam engine design and have success from the people that work in the mines. To ensure success, Watt traveled the world checking on his machines. In 1776, Watt married his second wife, who would become very wealthy. Over the days of production, employees stole Watt’s blueprints and resold them for money. Watt decided to sue these people and consequently won. As he was wandering through Glasgow Green he struck upon an idea that would revolutionize the steam engine. This idea was "that in order to make the best use of the steam it was necessary that first, that the cylinder should always remain as hot as the steam which entered it; secondly that when the steam was condensed, the water of which it is composed, and injection itself, should be cooled down to a 100 degrees, or lower where it is possible." This method did not work at first, but in 1765 he discovered "that if a communication were opened between a cylinder containing steam and another vessel, which was exhausted of air and other fluids, the steam, as an elastic fluid would immediately rush into the empty vessel, and continue to do so until it had established an equilibrium. If that vessel were kept dry and cool by an injection, or otherwise, more steam would continue to enter until the whole was condensed." He fixed the problem of water and air coming out of the exhausted vessel by adding a pump to extract both air and water. This is Watt's great contribution to the Newcome steam engine which would now run faster, cleaner, safer, and more economically efficient. This made the steam engine a useful economical source of power which for over a hundred years stayed exactly the same without alteration.

In the late 18th century, Britain was a parliamentary monarchy, this ideology meant that the parliament passed the laws and maintained expenditure. This encouraged the pursuit of scientific breakthrough where people sought profit. There was an exchange of scientific and revolutionary ideas that did not suffer censorship by church or state in Britain which otherwise happened in other European nations. This is where scientific discovery took over, Newton was able to explain the forces of gravity. This gave birth to the Age of Reason, which challenged the idea of God. The intellectual freedom in Britain saw groups of people sharing ideas and creating revolutionary ideas, one group was called the Lunar Society. One of its members, Matthew Boulton, a manufacturer and a businessman discovered that his factory in Birmingham, Soho Factory, required a source of energy that wasn’t restricted by the climate. This inspired him to switch from water to steam powered engines. Matthew Boulton was a good friend of James Watt, the founding father of the most effective steam engine during its time. “Revolutions are the locomotives of history” (Karl Marx). The concept of how far we’ve progressed in the past couple of centuries is hard to grasp. A revolution is defined as an instance of revolving and I think this quote from Karl Marx sums up the significance of revolutions in relevance to us as the human race; they pull us forward and allow us to progress. It’s whether or not these progressions are beneficial or not that makes or breaks the usefulness of a revolution.
