Baseball players chose to sacrifice their careers by fighting for their own country for many years. Over 4,500 baseball players traded their baseball uniforms for a military uniform during the time of World War 2. Throughout the years, baseball has changed how americans acted in war, and how baseball has gotten people through tough times. Over the years, baseball players have gone to war, won a war, and while they were gone organizations like the AAGPBL started, and many of the baseball rules have changed. Also things like the Black Sox Scandal happened during the World War 1. During World War 1 half a million people died but millions of people became veterans. They celebrated by having a baseball game at Chelsea Football Ground between the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. At this baseball game, the king and queen were present along with 18,000 other people. On October 9th, 1918, Captain Edward Grant, former MLB (Major League Baseball) player was shot and killed by an enemy artillery fire. Grant nearly played 1,000 games and had a batting average of .249. Corporal Bernard Leo Dolan and Sergeant Matthew S. Lanighan were both serving with the 78th Infantry Division, and were killed during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. An article in the December 11, 1918 Lockport Union-Sun & Journal reads, “The two boys were inseparable pals. In the army they were allotted places in ranks side by side and thus they went into the battles of France.” This just shows how close these men were going into war, fighting for their lives.
