Jasmen Prado Ms. Espitia ELA IV March 2024. Connection of Poverty to the Reconstruction. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president and he believed in freedom along with equality. The emancipation declared that all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states "are, and henceforth shall be free” (National Archives). The promise of emancipation was not fulfilled because it was not how slavery was abolished. Although the emancipation did not end slavery, it did shine light on the whole idea of abolishing slavery. The amendment was then approved as well as signed by Abraham Lincoln on February 1, 1865. Lincoln, “insisted that passage of the 13th Amendment be added to the Republican Party platform for the upcoming 1864 Presidential election” (National Archives). After Abraham Lincoln passed the 13th amendment, it created so much controversy between the whites and the blacks. The whites hated the fact that they were going to be considered “equal” with African Americans. The South hated that Lincoln had passed an amendment that would abolish slavery. The South needed the slaves to work for them so they would continue to make them their money so they could provide for themselves as well their families. But since the 13th amendment was passed, the South white individuals had no income, lots of small landowners fell into poverty and lost their lands and eventually became homeless. “During Reconstruction, former slaves—and many small white farmers—became trapped in a new system of economic exploitation—sharecropping. There is no simple answer to this question, because there are so many different reasons why a person may live in poverty. For example, they may have lost their homes, their jobs, or they have medical issues, etc. But when Ayesha talks about poverty she says, "The reasons are many - predatory financial services, stagnant wages, rising housing costs." Although these are amazing reasons why people are struggling with poverty, there are way more reasons than just those. But let's break down the reasons, Ayesha said. Predatory financial services are any lending practice that imposes unfair and abusive loan terms on borrowers, including high-interest rates, high fees, and terms that strip the borrower of equity. So for example, people may struggle with predatory financial services when buying food, clothes, etc. People in poverty already are struggling to stay afloat with the money they do have, but when the government has its taxes through the roof, these people just struggle more. Now for stagnant wages, this is when total output is either declining, flat, or growing slowly. Also meaning there is persistent unemployment, flat job growth, no wage increases, etc. Lastly, rising housing costs are where the housing costs have increased tremendously. Rising housing costs have made it very difficult for a person to buy a home or even rent a home to live
