Getting the youth involved is not the easiest thing to do. It is helping them realize the importance of becoming involved with the community. Also, parents and the community needs be more involved with our youth. It is about taking time for our youth and helping them grow up in a positive environment. A barrier for this can be tough because of how we reach out to our youth. They need motivation and they need a leader to reach out to them. It can be hard getting our community together, but once we are together we can easily guide our youth toward the right path. They have actually come up with a plan to counsel students who have thoughts about dropping out. I think this is an outstanding idea. They work with the students and figure out their struggles and everyone comes together to help these students out. I believe this should encourage all schools. The important thing is, keeping them out of trouble and keeping them in school. “Schools, parents, and the community should work together to promote the health, well being, and learning of all students. When schools actively involve parents and engage community resources they are able to respond more effectively to the health-related needs of students” (New Hampshire Department of Education, 2012 p.1). This Department also explains, “family and community involvements foster partnerships among schools, family and community groups, and individuals. These partnerships result in sharing and maximizing resources. And they help children and youth develop healthy behaviors and promote healthy families”. I think once our community can come together and get involved with our schools, we can foster partnerships create more resources in helping our students and families. It was very hard at first to get people to come together. 200 people attending the town hall meeting was a success because they had the opportunity to pass on the word. When I reached out to the school at first they did not want to talk to me because they felt that everything was under control. However, the school board contacted me and told me to come in. I explained how important it is for everyone to come together and support our youth and help guide them. We then came to a compromise. More volunteer jobs will be opening up for our youth, and counseling will be provided for students who have thoughts in dropping out. Counseling will allow the students to open up about their struggles and this can really prevent them for making a big mistake. However, we have a lot of barriers that are still stopping us from becoming more successful. We have a lot of parents who are not willing to become a part of this movement. They need to understand that this is hurting their child. However, with our encouraging community, they are willing to work with the students who have no support. This can give these students faith in themselves. Another barrier is, a lot of the community members are not willing to contribute in helping our youth. This school has had 5 principals in 4 years. I spoke earlier about this school being a part of the I-zone. The I-zone is a special subset of schools within Shelby County that are given the task of leading a school from the bottom 5% to the top 25%. In that there is a high turnover rate with administrators and teachers. I was selected to be a turnaround principal given a certain amount of time with the authority to make necessary changes. The community asked for a principal they could relate to. They wanted to be involved with the school and wanted resources given back to them so they could help their children. I listen to community concerns and established a parent power committee so they could be partners in education with us. We reached out into the community to garner some wrap around services to help and support our students. We gained seven (7) new Adopters who have formally taken the charge to provide resources that all students will need to achieve academically. Life Church gives us food. Bellview Baptist Church comes in and tutors all our 2nd grade students. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has volunteered to come in and work with our students on STEM projects. We have Omega Psi Phi who comes in an exposes our kids to social and character development. And the list goes on. There just so many programs and organizations ready to work with us because they know

One might believe that if an individual is more educated and hold an adequate job, this person would have a lot to lose if involved with crime. By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. I have learned that school board members look out for the students and that they are the number one source that community members should go to if they have a concern or a suggestion to better their children’s
Only now is evidence emerging testifying to the fact that much of the criticism leveled at public schools is exaggerated and misplaced. It is easy to forget that schools reflect what is happening in society, not cause it. Schools of today have recently shown that they are performing better than ever. Unfortunately, the traditional challenges confronting schools have increased dramatically and broadly as the world and students have changed. Now schools are facing drastic change -- necessary change that must take place quickly so students are able to cope in a dramatically changing world of the future. All of the criticism creates fear in teachers and administrators rather than a desire to embrace change.
Delinquency and gang violence has disturbed many communities in Urban African American areas. Engaging youth in community programs may take away from the violence, focusing on the missing factor within delinquents. Youth delinquents are molded into violent criminals before they have a chance to build themselves, the known reason is there communities have a part in there behavior.
Community policing is a strategy used by various departments in order to create and maintain a relationship between the law enforcement agency and the community being patrolled. Community policing is composed of three critical components, community partnerships, organizational transformation, and problem solving (Gardiner, 154, 2016). Community partnerships are pivotal in community policing since they increase public trust and create am improved relationship in law enforcement agencies better serving the community (Gardiner, 87, 2016). These partnerships not only offer public input but also encourage the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in order to minimize crime within the community (Gardiner, 88, 2016). Unlike, the traditional strategies of policing, community orientated policing has been adopted by two-thirds of agencies in order to improve public safety and control crime. (Gardiner, 148, 2016).
There are many different ways of policing in the 21st century and all address and apply different theories and ideas to try and control the crime this day in age. One of these methods is called community policing and many law enforcement agencies around our country and the world use it as a model for policing and interacting with communities. The stories and resilience I’ve seen and heard remind of the importance of civic engagement and leadership. I recognize that without the support of mentors such as Mr. Bravo, I would not be writing these words today. At age 22, I have returned to the community that shaped the individual I am today. My way of giving back for the opportunities I have had in life is by serving as a resource, mentor, and tutor to the youth in my community. I work closely with 11 at risk eight grade students at Carver Middle School, a school in South Los Angeles. My purpose in serving in this community is because my students deserve a quality education that will allow them to develop the skills to be civically engaged citizens. These communities should offer services and have available resources to help the families and there is a need for better relationships in these communities with law enforcement. It does not matter what is on the outside if there are values, respect, family support at home. I do not believe that my community is a description of who I am, because growing up my mom kept us involved in activities and off the streets. Today there are charter schools with smaller settings that help to improve the education for many, when I was growing up my mother sent my brothers and I to private school. Community service has become a requirement for an eighteen year old student to get admitted in an university or to pursue a paying job. Although I am involved in many community service, I personally believe that it should not be a requirement. A student should desire to work voluntarily. He or she should not be forced to perform the community service to make their college application look better. There are several learners who are against volunteering. The high school students have various things to see and learn. They should be able to help others by their own choice. They should not perform it just to graduate. Pressurizing can lead to have short-tempered apprentices which is not good.
