The movie Hotel Rwanda was drastically different from most of the movie and television shows that I watch. Primarily the media that I enjoy is focused around the supernatural and science fiction. Although the movie was a change from what I am used to, I found that it was a very good movie and quite enjoyed watching it. I also believe that it very well displayed at least some of the brutality that was occuring during the Rwandan genocide and helped to explain the events that took place. It showed the progression of events after Rwanda gained its independence. It showed how after Juvenal Habyarimana’s plane was either shot down or crashed Hutu extremists assumed that it was the fault of the Tutsis . It also showed how the RTLM (Radio Télévison des Milles Collines), which had been spreading hate about the Tutsis …show more content…

It did not show how it was the fault of the previous imperial powers in Rwanda that this genocide occured. Had Germany not originally segregated the Hutus from the Tutsis, and had the Belgians not continued this process, then there likely never would have been the hate in between the two cultures. Essentially the Rwandan genocide was Germany and Belgium’s fault. This was no shown in the movie. I also feel like the complete lack of action from the United Nations peacekeepers was not displayed as much as it should have been. It was shown that they could not act without being shot at first, and that the Hutus simply never shot at them so they could not technically do anything. Nevertheless I feel like it should have been a larger aspect in the movie as I feel it was one of the biggest tragedies to occur. Soldiers had to stand by and watch people get slaughtered right before their eyes; yet they could not do anything. This was sad for both the people they were supposed to ‘protect’ and them, no doubt many of those soldiers feel guilty that they were not able to do
