How Hot Dogs Are Made: The Real Story
There are many tall tales about the way in which hot dogs are made. I remember when I was a kid, my dad told us that hotdogs are pig fetuses and other bi-products picked up from the floor and thrown into the grinder. To tell you the truth I have thought that ever since I first heard it. It wasn’t until I decided to do a little research on this before gruesome and now pleasant process.
First, specially selected meat trimmings of beef and/or pork (just like the meat you buy at the grocery store) is cut or ground into small pieces and placed in a mixer. Poultry hotdogs will obviously use poultry trimmings. High speed, stainless steel choppers blend the meat, spices, ice chips and curing ingredients into a creamy, meaty batter. The batter is constantly weighed to insure that the correct amount of each ingredient is being used. The mixture is then pumped into an automatic linking machine, where it flows into casings.
The most popular brands of hot dogs such as, Oscar Meyer or Ball Park use cellulose casings, which are later removed. Some wieners use natural casings, which remain on the wiener when it is eaten. These wieners are considered more traditional, and are usually made by smaller manufacturers and tend to cost a little more. Once the casings are filled, they are linked into long strands of hot dogs and moved to the smokehouse; there they are fully cooked under controlled temperature and humidity conditions. They may be hardwood smoked for added color and flavor. After passing through the smoke and cook cycle, the hot dogs are placed in cool water. If the hot dogs were made with cellulose casings, they are sent to an automatic peeler, where the cellulose skin is stripped away. The individual links are then put through to the packaging equipment. When cellulose casings are used, the hot dogs are of exact size and weight. They are vacuum-sealed in plastic films to protect the freshness and flavor of the hot dog. Because the casings on natural casings wieners are made from cleaned and processed animal intestines, they are of similar, but not exact, size. Each package of hot dogs contains an ingredient statement, which lists everything that goes into it. These days, it is less common to use variety meats such as hearts in hot dogs.
It’s integral to accommodate culture in making changes. While accompanying Rhinehart trip to see Ethan Brown and his food truck, Widdicombe tried his tacos and described how “the white substance [of Brown’s taco] was remarkably meatlike: it tasted slightly fatty, and the texture resembled muscle fibre,” yet it was 100% plant-based protein. When asked why he went through the trouble to give it such a likeness to meat, “Brown explained that the main challenge with food tech is cultural. “People have been eating meat for two million years,” he said. “They’re hardwired to love meat, and they love the trappings of meat—Thanksgiving, Christmas, ballgames.” The food truck was there to show that plant-based chicken and beef could be part of an all-American life style.”
The way they prepared the hogs, first they were hung upside down, then they were attached to a moving cable; systematically “disassembled.” A worker would slit the throats, another one would “scald” them with hot water, then scrapped and gutted out. After that the hogs would get decapitated and refrigerated. The Chicago River became the “waste basket”, they would pump the blood and waste into the River. The hog’s lard would get converted into horns and the hoofs into glue. The intestines were made into sausages and contained mediocre quality chemically treated meat which included parts or rats and roaches. However, working in a slaughter house was more dangerous that eating their processed meats. Each year, hundreds of workers would get disabled and killed by on the job incidents. The workers work from around fifty-five to sixty hours per week and pay was low. They would earn around fifteen to twenty cents an hour. Each year the workers would get laid off for an approximate of eight weeks with no pay; they would have earned $475 per year. Most of the workers working in the meat packing industry would not earn enough money to support their families. Even though
... flesh are then ground into a paste-like matter, which is cleansed with the previously mentioned ammonia to rid it of E. coli. The meat filler product is purchased by many fast food restaurants, such as McDonald’s. The Beef Products executive predicts that his product will be in 100% of hamburgers within the next five years.
Hodgkin 's Lymphoma occurs when following a mutation in the lymphocyte DNA. The mutation occurs after birth, meaning that Hodgkin’s disease is not hereditary. The mutated DNA can lead to the uncontrolled growth of cancerous lymphocytes if untreated. The cancerous lymphocytes produce tumor masses in the lymph
This paper will focus on Yum Yum Doggy Treats, an all-natural human grade dog treat that is based off of well-known human desserts; Peanut Butter & Carrot Cake, Carrot Cake, Sweet Potato, and what everyone needs after eating, Breathmint. I will refer to the business as Yum Yum Doggy Treats or YYDT. YYDT was established October 2014, by a mother and daughter and later expanding to a family of four women. Their ultimate goal is to educate dog owners of the importance of feeding their dog’s fresh produce or natural dog treats. They also wanted to be different and give the dog lover community a healthy, creative, and delicious treat their pups would enjoy.
It is often found that the stereotypical “butch” and “femme” pairing are more visible than other lesbian relationships. However, this does not mean that they do not exist. The ever-growing popularity of the lesbian social sphere has symbolized both difficulties and effects of identifying with such a label. The label or identity itself, though distinctly separating lesbians from “normal” heterosexuals begins to exhibit pre-existing conflict experienced by gay males: “there’s always been something wrong (Aldrich, 38).” This quote implies the conditioned and ingrained belief that homosexuality’s “taboo” existence was more than just wrong, but distasteful and something that society should look down upon for being an “abnormality.” Sometimes, this social reality for lesbians made it hard for them to “come out the closet” and be visible. This experience is exemplified as “The repressed lesbian has a harder time of it, for she is less aware of her abnormality (Aldrich, 41).” Additionally, to be able to clearly and accurately identify “the lesbian is to meet the many women she is at close range; to see her against her various backgrounds, hear her sundry voices, and familiarize yourself with the diverse facades of her several lives (Aldrich, 42).” Here, the presence of the “double life” is demonstrated to further analyze the lack of privileges that the lesbian community had, including the social aspect of their
Drag can be considered central to queer theory itself since it has ascended in contemporary academic theoretical venues as the singular approach to gay and lesbian studies. Contreras explains that drag symbolizes many important and conflicted questions regarding the modern urban queer identities and gay male identities in particular. The drag queen can represent a lively fixture in a gay parade or a homophobic representation in mass culture. In this book he wrote some statements about drag that function as queer common
Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a form of cancer in the lymphatic system. This type of lymphoma originates in the white blood cells, and spreads throughout the lymph nodes in the body. The cause of Hodgkin’s lymphoma is unknown, and it is sometimes found by chance. This disease is typically treated with chemotherapy and radiation and, if found in the early stages, the patient has a good chance of being fully cured.

In this time, the public became more harsh towards LGBT people ( “A Brief History Of Drag Queens”). Drag performers had to be wearing no less than 3 items of male clothing at all times, if not, they would be arrested. In 1965, the Imperial court was founded. This was the first type of organization for drag queens, and it soon lead to drag balls. Drag balls are often described as a “fraternity like system” where queens formed houses and the “Drag Mother” would be the head of the house. The queens the Drag mother took under her wing were called “Sisters”(“A Brief History Of Drag Queens”). “Mothers” and “Fathers” helped younger members by offering moral support, social support, and sometimes even a place to live if they were kicked out of their own homes (Conger). At Drag balls they also would compete like fraternities in Drag Queens vs. Drag Kings competitions such as “Femme Queen Impersonation” and “Male
After arriving in America, they are taken to Packingtown to find work. Packingtown is a section of Chicago where the meat packing industry is centralized. They take a tour of the plant, and see the unbelievable efficiency and speed at which hogs and cattle are butchered, cooked, packed, and shipped. In Packingtown, no part of the animal is wasted. The tour guide specifically says “They use everything about the hog except the squeal,” (The Jungle, page 38).
Reflection, research, and mentorship help to embrace truth for our benefit, which helps to become individuals that are more authentic. An effective leader knows his or her own strengths and weaknesses, passions and obligations, and is always learning better to manage his or her own emotions, faults, and challenges.
...petizing new items says Cincinnati’s Shelly. For instance, two vendors offer hamburgers that include mushrooms in the beef, ‘adding flavor and juiciness’ while reducing sodium to the appropriate level” (qtd. In Jackson 26) Sourcing foods from vendors while maintaining a balanced budget is difficult, but it is especially important so that young minds are able to develop.
This formula is padded out with poultry by-product meal, which is essentially just unused, unidentified cuts of white meat blended together.
Group decision making has many benefits for the individuals involved and the organization itself. In order for group decision making to be efficient, it is important for a creative environment to exist. “Creativity is the mental and social process used to generate ideas, concepts and associations that lead to the exploration of new ideas (May, 2011, para.3). This allows each employee to explore ideas and feel comfortable to share them without fear of rejection.
