The documentary “Hot Coffee” explores the case in which an elderly lady filed a lawsuit due to a third degree burn. The Mcdonald's coffee case gained a great deal of attention, as it showcased how individuals are taking advantage of legal system with their access to easily start a lawsuit. The issue towards tort reform was brought upon the issue of the case, as individuals believe that justice was thrown out the window. Media then began to attract a great deal of attention, with the payout of “2.7 million dollars” for the damages and medical suspenses upon the old lady. A warning that pointed out the dangers that an individual can cause to a company, as a simple spill of coffee can turn out for the worst.
The elderly women in the documentary was named Stella Liebeck, who was in her eighties during the occurrence of her accident. Stella was sitting in her car one morning with a Mcdonald's Coffee on her side, as she would unexpectedly deal with a situation in which she would spill her coffee all over her lap. The spill caused a third degree burn on her lap, in which she asked McDonald’s to pay for her medical expenses.

The media however didn’t cover the aftermath of the case, as the judge reduced her payout to 480,000 dollars due to Stella also being in fault for her actions with her accidental spill. The community were not fond of the issue being covered worldwide by the media, as the issue of tort reform started to become the topic. The community defined the problem as an tort deform, as the elderly woman's actions shouldn’t have gone that far; especially without a placed limit of the amount of money injured people receive in a lawsuit. The lawmakers than began to take action, as they began to fix a few bad habits with the protection of tort reform, in which they used the “hot coffee”

She sued the McDonald’s company, received $160,000 in compensatory damages, and $2.9 million in punitive damages. A judge then reduced the punitive damages to $480,000. The final out-of-court settlement was of approximately $500,000. For many, this case is frivolous (meaning that the plaintiff’s prospects of being successful were low or inexistent), but it really highlights the question of excessive punitive damages compared to the damage suffered and its causes.
The documentary strived to show us how factories were corrupt that they couldn’t provide good working conditions for the workers until we lost people. This documentary is about the tragic fire that took place on March 25, 1911 in the Triangle factory. We can clearly see through this documentary that these people didn’t matter to the factory owners because their needs were not met. The documentary shows that the year before the fire took place the workers led a strike asking for better working conditions, but obviously their voices were not heard. After the fire took place this is when factories started improving working conditions. It is sad to learn that it took 146 lives of innocent people in order for factory owners to be convinced that they need to improve the poor working

Unfortunately for her family her story will probably be misquoted and misunderstood in order to support some rather specious arguments about personal responsibility and other ills of society.

I knew McDonalds was more harmful to than other fast food places, but I never knew about the lawsuit between McDonalds and it consumers. Using coffee as a device to drive and aid the story throughout the book is an interesting method of writing. As a matter of fact, making a textbook that has any story at all and is easy and entertaining to read, while still being educational and providing valuable information to the reader is an interesting feat that I’ve never seen any author attempt.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters I never really appreciated small local coffee shops when I was working at Coffee Bean, until I got hired at a local coffee shop serving Stumptown coffee. Stumptown only has one location in California, which is located in the art district of south downtown L.A. The coffee shop is huge, let alone, they have their own coffee roaster where they roast all their beans. Not only do they have their own roasting room, but they even have their own training lab as well, for the new baristas, which is unique because no other coffee shops have this. With regards to this, I was trained at Stumptown last month and it was a fascinating experience!
