Every year patients whom come to the hospital to receive care are injured because of being in the hospital. Some injuries are preventable, and some are still learning to be controlled. The joint commission was designed to monitor and evaluate hospitals on their ability to keep patients safe. Two areas that are always of high importance is the prevention of infection and the prevention of falls during the hospital stay. Resilient care from the nursing staff can prevent and significantly reduce the occurrences of these falls, and infections that are obtained while receiving care. Falls in the hospital can occur in any unit, regardless of their age and level of care. Prevention of falls can be easily implemented through characteristics that are universally used at that the hospital, and specific to the unit and type of care performed. Preventing falls in the hospital is not completely avoidable, but diligent steps must be done to decrease the amount and severity of falls. Injuries to patients caused by falls can result in broken bones and even death. When a patient is injured the hospital, stay is often lengthened, and new complications can occur. Medicare will not pay for injuries sustained during hospital stays and as a result hospital pay for the hospital stay of the patient.

Educate the patient to ask for help when ambulating. Teach them that equipment such a IV pole can be tricky to maneuver and have lines that make it easy to get caught in and trip. During rounds on patients ensure that patient has all the important things they need such as glasses, water, and cellphones. Encourage patients wear devices such as hearing aids and glasses if needed and assess for the need of a walker. Most importantly never leave a patient’s room without leaving the call bell within reach, the side rails up, and the bed in the lowest
