Famous English poet and playwright William Shakespeare uses “hope” in King Richard III as: “True hope is swift, and flies with swallow's wings: Kings it makes gods, and meaner creatures kings.” (Shakespeare) In this quote from Shakespeare, hope is liken to wings that elevates people during its existence, a power which strengthens people. During my research different sources, from academic writings to visual sources, discussed how the result of an aim is affected by “hope”. The results that I gained from my research have shown that people can’t achieve their dreams in the lack of hope. Hope is the irreplaceable element of success.
The Oxford dictionary, an online dictionary which is created by The Oxford University, defines hope as “to want something to happen and think that is possible”(Hope). The denotation by The Oxford dictionary vitiates the true meaning of the word “hope”. “To want something to happen” (Hope) can be the explanation of require/desire however simplifying hope like that would be ignoring the effects of hope which are beyond desiring. After the requirement, having hope for the aim would help in the process of achieving. Defining second part of hope as “to think something is possible” (Hope) would be insufficient because hope can make people believe and attach themselves to their aim even though in the situations which are called impossible. With this belief, hope can make people trust themselves and allow them to go for what they want.
While the dictionary weakens the meaning of hope, the use in the quotation from Pittacus Lore discusses the existence of “hope”. “When you have lost hope, you have lost everything. And when you think all is lost, when all is dire and bleak, there is always hope” (Lore). Pit...

What we hope for is not always what we need. This is prevalent in the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston where the characters have his or her dream crushed for the sake of fate. This is especially true for Janie who strives throughout the novel to have her dream of “the pear tree” realized, and Hurston shows this using a variation of metaphor, imagery, and personification.
“Hope is defined as the action of wishing or desiring that something will occur.” Hope helps people move forward in life to see what’s coming next for them. For example, “I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his sole support” (Wiesel, “Night”.) This quote explains the effects of hope in a pitiful situation. Eliezer Wiesel and his father were torn apart, mentally and physically from everything they
While buried, so deep beneath the cavity of adversity, finding hope is nearly impossible. But, it is the ability of decisions that aids as the last gleam of hope retrievable. After facing many struggles, it becomes almost involuntary for someone to put up a guard. With using that strategy, and the transgression of time without progress, there’s a certain ignition of comprehension. Change needs to occur, and a complete remedy of that
And though he experiences both sides of the paradox, it is ultimately the uplifting and inspiring effect of hope that pushes him to fight back against his oppression rather than continue to accept his enslavement. Grappling with hope and using it to move himself forward against overwhelming odds shows that even though it can be used to pacify people and keep them in their place, wishing for a rosy future that can never exist, it can also be the fire that motivates them to finally change their
What is the director ultimately saying about the ways in which hope affects the individual?
Hope, by definition means to look forward to something with reasonable desire and confidence. Hope also means a person or thing in which expectations are centered. When discussing the word hope, one must consider the core values by which the word works around. You could hope for financial success, world peace, or simply hope for some good out of your day. In 2006, Barack Obama wrote the political biography The Audacity of Hope to outline his core political and spiritual beliefs, as well as his opinions on different aspects of American culture. The Illinois senator divided the book into nine chapters, each concentrating on both his own and the United States’ successes and failures in local and state politics. While revealing great leadership attributes, life experiences, personal qualities and hard facts, largely in anecdotal method, Barack Obama offers realistic, wide and thoughtful responses to today’s current domestic controversies using artistic appeals, such as ethos, pathos and logos. Senator Obama also gives the audience an in-depth analysis of the key policies that need to be changed for both Democrats and Republicans, and delivers an inherent message to offer hope to anyone, regardless of background or experiences. In the prologue, he discusses in great detail virtually every major political issue facing the American electorate today, offering his opinions and possible strategies for reform. “My motivation in entering politics was to cut through decades of polarizing partisanship and develop a moderate, effective approach to our government.” (Barackopedia.org). Obama notes that this same impulse, an impulse of a secure, functional and sustainable administration, prompted him to write The Audacity of Hope.
Hope isn’t just a word, it’s a feeling. Moreover, it’s a word, a feeling, and a desire. In the Urban Dictionary it defines hope as, “A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. A feeling of trust. To want something to happen or be the case.” So it’s true, hope isn’t just a word. In The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne has
“Hope in the face of difficulty. Hope in the face of uncertainty. The audacity of hope! A belief in things not seen. A belief that there are better days ahead.” President Obama’s 2004 keynote speech gives a timeless message of hope that especially resonates with minorities who face an uncertain future. Similarly, in her novel Beloved, Toni Morrison develops the theme that hope in the face of forced dehumanization, through the relationship between darkness and light, gives the oppressed a purpose and the ability to overcome and thrive despite persecution.
Hope is the expectation and the desire for an event to happen. For many people, having hope is to see a reality with a positive feeling. From hope, faith comes in. Having faith in something unrealistic motivates people to keep moving forward and try the best of their abilities to make something happen. Most of today’s religions, especially Christianity, based most of their doctrine on the faith of salvation from Jesus Christ‘s sacrifice and the hope of living for eternity, if we obey the laws of God in accordance with the Bible.
Everyone has a different idea of hope. For example, Jamal’s and Latika’s idea of hope was their love for each other. Their love is what gave them the will to survive and get through everything that was thrown at them in life, even at such a young age. Ken Saro-Wiwa’s hope and will to survive was his passion to help people of Ogoni and change their futures forever. Saro-Wiwa didn’t live long enough to see the courage he gave to citizens of Ogoni to fight on their own, but his people gave him hope to fight back while he could. He has inspired many people, and like he said, he wanted to die trying to make something right, and he did. If either Latika, Jamal, or Ken Saro-Wiwa lost hope, they would have never had the will to survive and achieve their goals.
All people have something they hope for. Whether it’s something big or small it depends on luck, chances and actions for the dream to become real. Like any normal person I to have hopes and like any other normal person it all depends on luck, chances and actions.

The “Hope” is optimism. Freedom from hope is freedom to your soul. You can no longer hurt yourself by living. It is hard to believe that being hopeless leads to living, but living is an imprisonment. We try to be the best we can be but does life limit us?
