In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the theme of honor is one that presents itself throughout the novel by having a major role in the plot. In a small town in Colombia, honor is taken very seriously. Angela Vicario, a young bride, is returned to her family for not having her virginity intact. When her twin brothers find out about their sister’s dishonorable actions, they set out to murder the man who they believe did this.
“On the other hand, the fact that Angela Vicario dared put on the veil and the orange blossoms without being a virgin would be interpreted afterwards as a profanation of the symbols of purity” (Márquez 41). From the quotation, it has been revealed at this point in the novel that Angela is not a virgin. As a bride in the small town, one is expected to have chastity which is why they have the veil and orange blossoms to represent the purity a young bride should have. However, Angela is not a virgin and is dishonoring the veil and orange blossoms by using them when she is not known to be pure. Therefore, after the revelation of this, the act is seen as a defiance of the glory of purity.
On the whole account, however, Angela is a dishonor as herself, especially in the small town of Colombia that the novel is set in. Pura Vicario, Angela’s mother, would not let the girl out of her sight with Bayardo San Roman, her fiancé, as to “watch over her honor” (Márquez 37). Angela’s two confidantes tell that the linen sheet upon the bed would be enough to show Bayardo that she was a virgin if she herself stained it with something that represents the blood of lost purity. ... with. The author portrays that the townspeople believe that as long as one justifies themselves rightfully with doing their actions in honor than they should do no wrong. Pura protects her daughter from further shaming herself by covering her in dressings that do not show the perhaps mourning of her secret lover.
In conclusion, the theme of honor affects the plot from beginning to end. All of the characters are highly influenced by it. Without the author’s careful construction of the theme, the supposed justification of the murder of Santiago Nasar and other actions in the novel would be inapplicable and pointless. As the judge is shown to be portrayed in his notes “there should be the untrammeled fulfillment of a death so clearly foretold” (Márquez 99).

Honour went hand in hand with how reputable a family was considered to be within the community. There were two types of honour; “honor” which symbolized the honour brought to an individual by their family or their birth right, and “honra” which represented ones virtue in the sense of morality and piety or their saintliness. Honour killings would occasionally be performed (most often by men) on women who took lovers behind their husband’s backs. To restore his honour, the husband would be legally allowed to kill both his wife and her lover. Women would also resort to violent tendencies if anyone threatened their families’ honour and reputation. High class woman were known to protect both their own honour and the households by filing lawsuits and beating other women they saw as treats, making women more likely than men to act out in defence. In the “Scandal at the Church” case, Mr. de Alfaro indirectly refers to his wife’s and his family’s honour multiple times as his wife was attacked in the daylight crowds after mass. With so many people present to witness his wife’s beating and Mrs. Bravo’s insulting words, Mr. de Alfaro’s family honour was tarnished as a direct result from the scandal. Even as a man of a lower class, honour is still incredibly important as other families within the community base their perceptions on how honourable and thus reputable a family is. Mrs.
Another issue that the writer seemed to have swept below the carpet is the morality of women. First, women seemed to have been despised until they started excelling in mass advertising. Also, the author seems to peg the success of the modern woman to clothing and design. This means that women and cloths are but the same thing. In fact, it seems that a woman’s sex appeal determine her future endeavours, according to the author. It is through this that I believe that the author would have used other good virtues of women to explain
The theme that has been attached to this story is directly relevant to it as depicted by the anonymous letters which the main character is busy writing secretly based on gossip and distributing them to the different houses. Considering that people have an impression of her being a good woman who is quiet and peaceful, it becomes completely unbecoming that she instead engages in very abnormal behavior. What makes it even more terrible is the fact that she uses gossip as the premise for her to propagate her hate messages not only in a single household but across the many different households in the estate where she stays.
When I first read Chronicle of a Death Foretold, I did not pay close attention to the deflating of authority with the characters Poncio Vicario, Colonel Aponte, and Father Amador. After listening to the presentations, everything made more sense. The true depth of the Vicario brothers’ threat to kill Santiago fails to be recognized by those in authority. The most respected official of the town, Colonel Aponte, does little to prevent the murder and fails to uphold the honor he has been charged with protecting. Instead of letting Santiago Nasar know about the murder plot against him, the Colonel goes back to his game of dominos at the social club. In addition “Colonel Lazaro Aponte, who had seen and caused so many repressive massacres, becomes a vegetarian as well as a spiritualist” (Garcia Márquez 6). The punishment for his neglect results in him eating liver for breakfast.
...all want to believe that the crime was truly “foretold”, and that nothing could have been done to change that, each one of the characters share in a part of Santiago Nasar’s death. Gabriel Garcia Marquez writes about the true selfishness and ignorance that people have today. Everyone waits for someone else to step in and take the lead so something dreadful can be prevented or stopped. What people still do not notice is that if everyone was to stand back and wait for others, who is going to be the one who decides to do something? People don’t care who gets hurt, as long as it’s not themselves, like Angela Vicario, while other try to reassure themselves by thinking that they did all that they could, like Colonel Lazaro Aponte and Clotilde Armenta. And finally, some people try to fight for something necessary, but lose track of what they set out for in the first place.
Although she got pregnant by someone other than her husband they did not look at the good and joyful moments the child could bring. Having a baby can be stressful, especially being that the village was not doing so great. The baby could have brought guilt, anger, depression, and loneliness to the aunt, family, and village lifestyle because having a baby from someone other than your husband was a disgrace to the village, based on the orientalism of women. Society expected the women to do certain things in the village and to behave a particular way. The author suggests that if her aunt got raped and the rapist was not different from her husband by exploiting "The other man was not, after all, much different from her husband. They both gave orders; she followed. ‘If you tell your family, I 'll beat you. I 'll kill you. Be, here again, next week." In her first version of the story, she says her aunt was a rape victim because "women in the old China did not choose with who they had sex with." She vilifies not only the rapist but all the village men because, she asserts, they victimized women as a rule. The Chinese culture erred the aunt because of her keeping silent, but her fear had to constant and inescapable. The plot of Chronicle of a Death Foretold is totally based on the understanding that maintaining a woman’s virginity is important enough to kill for and conversely that anyone violating this social moray was risking death. Virginity is viewed as synonymous with honor. This aspect is what Garcia Marquez challenges with the use of irony. Throughout the book, he inserts aspects that speak directly to the importance of this theme and reinforces this concept by use of several devices, of which irony is the most prominent.

Gabriel García Márquez employs religious symbolism throughout his novella which alludes to Christ, his familiars, and his death on the cross. There are many representations throughout the novella that portray these biblical references, such as the murder of Santiago, the Divine Face, the cock’s crowing and the characters, Bayardo San Roman, Maria Cervantes, Divina Flor, and the Vicario children.

Honor is the motivation for several of the characters to behave in certain manners, as honor plays a key role in Colombian culture. There were repercussions for dishonorable acts and similarly, there were rewards for honorable ones. Also, ritual is a vital element within the work that surrounds the story line’s central crime: Santiago Nasar’s death.

This can also be linked to the biblical reference of Cane, ‘him who became an outcast’.
Foremost, Marquez foretold Santiago’s fate with the opening line “on the day they were going to kill him, Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning to wait for the boat the bishop was coming on” to illustrate our fate is decided before we are born (Marquez 3). Marquez lets the reader know that Santiago was going to die but the fact that he also includes the plan Santiago had that morning
In the two novellas No One Writes to the Colonel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Garcia-Marquez shows the complexity involved in the pursuit of honor. He explains through his writings that preserving honor is essential to live, but can be very harmful to others. The pursuit of honor can cause complex and difficult situations that can either benefit or harm others in a society. It can cause people to either live a truthful life or a false life run by lies and illusion. In the process of attaining honor strong relationships and friendships can fall apart. The pursuit of honor can give liveliness and vigor to people or put them people into a state of paralysis.
The novella “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is viewed largely as a scathing critique of societies bound to an unrefined code of honour. While that premise is relatively simple,fairly straightforward and easily justifiable, a case in stark contrast to the aforementioned idea could also be argued.The main idea for this new case being,that defending the very essence of honour was necessary for the survival of the community in order to prevent any form of moral decline and no one man should put to a stop,the actions of those who were morally obliged to undertake the restoration of honour,after all the affairs of honour were “sacred monopolies, giving access only to those who are part of the drama”(97). Indeed,as any reader who has an idea of human history would note,that there is a natural human desire for vengeance against those who desecrate their sacred ethos.Unfortunately, this essay will not dwell on this counter point, neither would a thesis be made out of it, it is only mentioned to highlight the negative implementing factor used in the restoration of honour and that factor is brutality.
