Throughout our childhood, making our way up through the dozen years of schooling we are required to complete, the intolerance for cheating is always revealed, and there’s obvious effort in enforcing it, but not many people follow the honor code set in place. For any reason at all, the decision between compromising your morals and maintaining your integrity always depends on the consequences and the environment in which it’s taking place. Establishing an honor code isn’t what’s difficult, maintaining one is. Maintaining an honor code should be done fairly and thoroughly, with no exceptions or bias. Even though students may be aware of the honor code, that doesn’t make them immune to cheating. It’s not enough to construct and present requirements--there has to be a swaying factor to influence the consideration of cheating. A brilliant approach of this would be “a requirement for students to write a pledge of honor on every piece of work submitted” (Source B). …show more content…
Although it was voted against, the excessiveness of the requirement, would direct students away from cheating since they have to go through such excessive obstacles. It’s always depending on the student, of course, but an influencing factor of cheating is knowing that they are being watched (Source A). Regardless of how troublesome the steps to maintaining an honor code become, taking the extreme will always give you the results you seek. Maintaining an honor code can be difficult for teachers and administration to keep track of because there’s so many students and not enough eyes to watch them.
The desired result can be achieved through “relying on peer monitoring to control cheating” (Source F). This relates back to Bacall’s cartoon: if students know that they are being watched, they will sway away from cheating (Source A). There’s opposing view stating that “if a student enters a college with mostly “cheater” types, not only are the costs of cheating very low, encouraging fellow “cheater” types to cheat, but the benefits of cheating (or the costs of not cheating) are very high, encouraging even “honest” types to cheat” (Source C). If people are all aware of the honor code, and that it is being obsessively inforced, the decision to cheat will cease. The factor personal integrity plays in academic dishonesty is very high, but if an honor code is maintained thoroughly then the amount of cheating taking place would decrease

To bring an end to cheating and begin to create a place where the honor code is always put into consideration, there has to be prompting components being used to influence the consideration of cheating. Despite the great role personal integrity possesses in academic dishonesty, the amount of cheating taking place would decrease extremely if an honor code is maintained rigorously. If respecting your morals and maintaining your integrity isn’t reason enough to keep from cheating, hopefully the participation in maintaining a meticulous honor code will.
From 1754-1763, Britain fought the French and Indian war. Although Britain had won the war, they still had a lot of war debts to pay off. Britain turned to the colonies to pay off their debts by taxing them. The taxes angered the colonists because they believed it violated their rights. Benjamin Franklin had initially proposed the Albany plan of Union to unite the colonies, however this law was rejected by all of the colonial governments. It wasn't until after all of the British laws and taxes that the colonies would unite and write the Declaration of Independence.
During the 1700’s the Britain Colonist decided to declare war against Great Britain. The war began due to friction between the British colonists over the King's policies. The colonist eventually lost their patience and started a revolution. High taxes, and no religious freedom led the colonist to fight for self government.
Beginning of the 15th and 16th centuries, Europeans began to explore in the Atlantic Coast of Africa. They were mainly lured into the excessive trade in gold, spices and other goods without knowing about slaves in Africa. Nonetheless, Europeans had no success of taking over these African states to achieve all of these goods but later they did take over various regions in other areas. Africans seems to be willing to sell as many as 11 million people to the Atlantic slave trade to the Europeans. Thus, this makes them the first people to have slaves not the Europeans that forced them into this trade. Furthermore, at the start the Africans seems to have full control of the slave trade, but the Europeans came in and slowly dominated the trade without the Africans knowing. Later on, the trade was overturned and everything went back orderly.
I’m so happy to be given the opportunity to join National Junior Honor Society(NJHS). I would love to be a member. I think it is important for kids to be involved in the community. Also, myself personally it would be an honor to be a face for our school.
As a student at Northvale Public School, I have grown up with my older siblings being inducted into an organization called the National Junior Honor Society. I had seen all the hard work and dedication they put into their school work and activities just to get into this society, making me want to be just like them. Then a few weeks ago, I found a note on my desk in homeroom telling me that I had been nominated to be apart of this society. Through citizenship and character, leadership, and service, I intend on being inducted into the society I have heard so much about. Though it will take a lot of effort this school year, being a part of this society is a dream of mine that I will make sure to come true.
However, this may stem from a lack of enforcement of the rules. Even at the most prestigious schools, such as Harvard University, students are not upholding the rules implemented: “The possibility that 125 Harvard students ‘improperly collaborated’ on an exam in the spring has galvanized … discussion about … honor codes” (Source: C). In this case, people may argue that the only party at fault consists of the students. However, the faculty may be partially guilty as well, as their lack of care towards the rules has created a situation that jeopardizes the school’s integrity. Revision may then seem like the least of the school’s priorities, as they must show they seriously consider educational integrity. Likewise, at the University of Virginia, “157 students have been investigated by their peers in the largest cheating scandal in memory” (Source: D). Again, the school and all those who work there hold at least part of the fault for this ignorance because, theoretically, they should preserve and enforce the rules provided. The fact that the scandal exists means that they were not doing their jobs to their fullest. Although revision may seem simpler to carry out, the school’s staff must show an attempt at intervention within the student lives to keep them on a path towards
Dan Ariley’s "factors to decrease dishonesty" have connections to how students can stop cheating in and outside of the class room. In the class room, it is easy for the students to look up an answer on their phone to cheat on a test or exam. The way to stop cheating among college students is to think about their morals and honor pledges. If a student cheats on a test and receive a good grade, the student will not have the same feeling as the get a good grade
Anti-federalist were the men that felt that the states should have more control and that the constitution should not be ratified. Having the government ratify the constitution would allow the government to gain too much power which could easily lead to a monarch. The whole reason everyone left england was to get more freedoms and if the constitution is to be ratified who knows if the freedoms the people just got back will be taken away again.
Honor Code has evolved over the years and its becoming more strict in its ways and flaws. “Taggert accused the administration of using the code to punish rather than to help students improve themselves” (Bergera). It lists of forbidden acts are antiquated and invade the students’ sense of privacy without truly defining the quality of honor. 1.The dropping of the Atomic bombs on Japan was an unjustified, inhumane war crime. Firstly, these bombing attacks on Japan were radically motivated by American resentment towards "the savage Japanese". Secondly, the main intentions of these bombings was to scare communist Russia, rather than to defeat Japan. Additionally, there were many other alternatives to using nuclear weaponry; for instance Russia was planning an invasion for the following week. Also, the use of Atomic bomb on innocent civilian cities was inhumane, and illegal according to the law stated in the League of Nations. The bomb was intended only for last resort defence purposes, using it in attack is simply inhumane.
In “Why Colleges Should Ditch Honor Codes” Susan Greenberg is trying to inform the audience as to why society does not require the honor code anymore. The rules that lie behind this regulation are becoming outdated and more students are finding themselves punished for disobeying it. A lot of honor code schools are trying to get rid of this process because it only brings the students more pressure. Typically, students that are in honor code schools tend to cheat more than schools that do not possess it. If a student is enrolled in a more prestigious school, he/she is more tempted to cheat in order to maintain his or her good grades. Across the nation, schools, colleges and universities have established honor codes in their campuses to discourage cheating and promote academic integrity. Whether or not their honor codes are effective is a topic well debated and both sides have merit. At my school, Brookwood High School, the honor code should be revised, for only in an environment where the students are involved, consequences for cheating are high, and a culture of honor and integrity are established, can such as system thrive and succeed.
Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. Cheating might be seen as an easy way to obtain a good grade, get into a good college, or maintain scholarships or financial aid, but the consequences could affect the life and the future of the student.
That is not always the case, if the students’ belief is set to always do the right thing it will be done without any hesitation. “Despite the detailed testimony of the student who reported the infraction, the accused student walked free. The student reporting the infraction was socially stigmatized but also didn’t regret taking action.”(Gabor, 1). This also proves that if honor codes are added it can work effectively. Many students want to do the right thing, but sometimes need a little help in the right direction. If cheating is not reported the integrity of the honor code gets damaged severely. If people cheat and they do not report the cheating, the cheater will start to believe that it is okay to cheat and it will become a habit that is not good to have as a
Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
