Homework-Free Weekends: A Brief Break for Students
High School students are very busy during the school week with their academic classes, extracurricular activities, and responsibilities at home. The weekend is a time for students to take a break from school and spend time doing other activities. Most teachers assign homework over the weekend, which doesn’t allow much time for these activities. Markesan High School students are especially busy during the week. The weekend is their only time to take a break from their busy schedules and take time for personal activities. Markesan High School students should not receive homework over the weekend.

Students are busy during the week, which leaves the weekend as a convenient time to visit grandparents or other family members. For example, some Markesan High School students visit their grandparents at the Markesan Resident Home on the weekends. Since they are in school all week, this is their only time to visit with them. Families are also very busy during the week with school, work, and after-school activities. Sometimes it can be hard to find a time that works for everyone to get together. The weekend is a convenient time for families to do this. If students had homework assigned on the weekend, it would be challenging to find time to complete the assignments if they were visiting with family. Spending time with friends during the week is rare because of curfews and after-school activities. Students spend time together on the weekend if they don’t have jobs or other events going on. For example, some Markesan High School friends don’t have classes together during the school day and can’t talk after school. This leaves the weekend as the only time to visit with each other. If teachers didn’t assign homework over the weekend, it would allow time for spending with friends and
79% of American middle school and high school students take part regularly in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Many students participate in sports that can take up to 4 hours of their time, daily. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school students will be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste.
Just the existence of an extra free day allows students to get more homework done and have more time. For example, if you have a project that takes at least three days to complete, and you were absent one day, this will give you extended time to finish your project. My next point coincides with my first one; that having an extra day without school “stretches” work time. This means that students will have more time to do a project or homework, which means that students won’t feel as pressured, which means that the quality of the homework is much higher. My next point also coincides with the previous point; that students won’t feel as pressured and worried as a two day weekend.
School provides a lot of work. There are eight total classes in a semester, and sometimes it can be hard to keep up with everything that school asks of its students. Because of all the work, students tend to ignore the requirements school has. (For example, students will ignore due dates or study suggestions.) However, taking Fridays off (and replacing the days with extra weeks of school) will provide success for the students.
"I didn’t feel [stressed] until I was in my 30’s. It hurts my feelings that my daughter feels that way at eleven" (Ratnesar 313). This statement describes the intense issue facing the American Education System today. More and more students are spending a lot of out of school time on enormous amounts of homework. The overabundance of homework is putting pressure on the students, along with their parents. Our nation has steadily focused on after school studying to the point of possible exhaustion. In this paper, I will attempt to explain how educators are relying on homework as the major form of education, and how the amounts are too demanding on the students.
Relaxation could improve a students ability to think and therefore enhance their chance of excelling at their academics. According to an Indiana school,"Having one weekday off of school each week allows more flexibility for teachers and students." Students have an extra day to make sure that they do all their studies and still get extra time to do extra curricular activities. This also prevents homework and studying excuses students might make as a result of lack of time and abundant amount of homework. A five day week of school gives students a hard time as they have to adjust both activities and studies in 2 days. As a result of a five day school week students get less time to spend with their families, but with a four day school week they could spend more with family and still have everything finished and be prepared. Concluding from these chain of events, an implementation of a four day school week will result in a students academic growth.
Some people would argue that homework should not stay in schools because it decreases the amount of family time. They say that when a child is doing homework, it decreases family time because that child is not involved in the family but the homework (“Teachers…”). This theory has been proven wrong; in fact homework actually increases family time. Family time increases by the encounter the parents and children have while doing homework. It brings them together by how the children ask for help on their homework (5). The child will ask their parent or siblings to help them, and that will spark the family time. The parents will try to help and will not stop till their child understand how to do it. While helping with their child’s homework the parents can ask how their day went, and how that certain class was. Engaging in conversation always increases family time. Not only will they get to talk to their children, the parents will be informed of their child’s studies and how good or bad they are doing in school. Which proves that homework increases family time.
Sports are one of the main cause for the lack time spent with family. The sports practice would occur almost every day and only have a few other days to either catch up on homework or watch the football games that is happening right now. Even during the summer breaks the players are still being
Todays students are busier than they have ever been in American history. Homework is a large contributor to this. The average student in America has approximately four hours of homework each night. If students start homework right when they get home from school, that gives them free time starting at 7:00 PM. The majority of students also have jobs. So. between school, work, homework, and practice, that leaves them virtually no time to be able to hang out with friends or to participate in family activities.
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
Sometimes they can even have their work done by the time they’re back at school. Either way, there is still work to make up, which is stressful for teens while also trying to keep up with the current classwork.
Chingos states, "Summer vacation is a time for families to reconnect," which states that families need more time to visit with each other (Chingos). Some families do not get to see each other as much during the school year due to too much going on. Some students have Summer jobs and need a break so they can work hard to get some money. Kali DeMucha states, "Quality family time is important to the emotional and developmental being of a child," which tells us that family is important to your health (Kail DeMucha). When parents work and children
Homework offers multiple benefits for real life. One benefit of homework is that it helps the student develop essential skills. “I say give the kids a break… Let the kids enjoy life before life gets too tough.” Aggressive homework can have an effect on students and their lives. Excessive homework can bring a strain on family life. You are going to find in this essay how having a lot of homework can have an effect. How does school play a role? School serves as a major role as a social institution. It’s part of our lives and also it is a major priority. Schools should limit the amount of homework daily. Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
Saturday is the only time they can see family. This would be true for students whose parents
