Homelessness is a serious issue in today's St. Thomas and is largely ignored. To many, the problem of homelessness is invisible and often goes unnoticed. When these people do see the homeless, they are assumed to be some form of beggars who need to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” or mentally ill people who “just can't help themselves”. In either case the central point remains; the homeless must be people who are incapable or unwilling to help themselves. After all, wouldn't they stop being homeless if they just tried? These sorts of rationalizations cover a more disturbing truth; that for many in today's society, the spectre of homelessness is more pressing of a problem than helping those who are already on the streets.

Homeless individuals are observed to repeat the same thing on a daily basis because the cycle is hard to break on most occasions unless the individual is receiving continuous help. There are certain programs that help to reduce, support and help homeless individuals who are suffering.
Some individuals allow to be helped while others deny the opportunity to be changed. There is no YMCA or public housing available to temporarily homeless people on the islands which is unfortunate. For many years leading up to present day, Emancipation garden and Fort Christian area has been home to the homeless people within St. Thomas. Some sleep in the Gazebo, the floors, benches, bus stops or even the grass nearby with their belongings next to them. Most lose all they have and end up where they are today. Most homeless individuals try to get by from day to day because that’s all they have to live for, hoping to get by on whatever help they may receive each day in hopes that things may improve somehow. Some may not realize how little they can do to help or how much the little things can mean to individuals in need. Those of us who are not homeless do not realize the hardships homeless individuals go through to sleep at night or the struggle to salvage for food day by day. Homeless individuals fall into many different categories whether its family, veterans or chronic which can be broken into deeper categories such as drug abuse, medical symptoms, and more. Chronic homelessness is an unaccompanied homeless individual with a disabled condition, substance use disorder or mental illness or has been homeless for more than a year. Family homelessness is more than one individual needing shelter as a family which lacks a stable home or even food to eat. Veteran homelessness are individuals that suffer from a wide range of disorders, living in urban areas and suffering from mental illness or alcohol due to their pervious duties and as a veteran; one that has served in the active military, navy or air service.
