An increasingly popular clothing style is inspired by homeless people. As it's name implies, homeless chic mimics the kind of clothing worn by homeless people. Essentially, homeless chic is an offencive style worn by the rich, making fun of the poor. Inspiration for homeless chic came from the actual homeless. John Galliano got the idea for homeless chic when he began seeing homeless people along the streets when he started jogging. In other words, before he began jogging, he didn't even notice the homeless. Even worse, when he finally did notice them, he looked at them thtough the eyes of fashon. Additionally, Galliano said, "Some of these people [the homeless] are like impersarios." The homeless aren't impersarios. They aren't even trying
to be. The fact that thats what he thought of them is offencive Homeless chic is offencive style. Jenna Sauers claims homeless chic is “more of a cruel ‘lack of perspective’ than a fashion statement.” The homeless aren't trying to be fashonable. They are wearing whatever they can. Mimicing their style is offencive because it shows how little someone knows, or cares, about the homeless. Sara Weber said in her article, "Homeless chic is...representative of a less-than-empathetic consumer base." In other words, by wearing homeless chic, one is showing how little they care about the homeless. That is, if they even know there are homeless people that wear the clothing they do not because they are stylish, but because it is all they have. The homeless chic trend is irrational. It is faded and torn. It doesn't make any sence to wear clothing that is in bad condition.
This shows that homelessness is not a one stop shop. Significant factors and actions have to come into play for someone to become homeless. The theses goes into great detail on the lack of studies and analysis from past years. She hits hard on the fact that many homeless people are seniors or mentally ill people. These people have a hard time taking care of themselves and rely on faulty systems including, care homes, financial aid, disability and ect. General triggers from past events in life that were traumatising can also play a huge role in homelessness.
It’s shown satirically on television, made fun of in music, and joked about in day-to-day activities: being homeless. I don’t understand what’s so funny about being homeless. The struggle to stay alive in an uninviting climate with nothing but the clothes on your back, doesn’t seem very fun. Yet in the media, being homeless is still treated like a joke. In the essay “Homeless” by Anna Quindlen, the reader is shown what it truly means to be without a home. My view on the struggles that homeless people have to endure is very similar to that of Quindlen’s in her essay, which perfectly captured the reality of what it is like to be without a home, and what it truly means to be homeless; while simultaneously demonstrating to me the negative effect
The homeless have the ability to make the non-homeless feel threatened and unsafe (Marin.) “They are homeless, are strangers, alien and therefore a threat (Marin.)” The threat and danger that homeless pose to American society could easily be eradicated by shipping all of them to other countries. We would then no longer have to deal with them on a day to day basis.
Have you ever thought about the possibilities of becoming homeless? I think about that almost every day; I try to comprehend and picture in my head the life as someone that lives on or off the streets of New York. New York isn’t one of the cleanest places in the United States, but it sure has one of the highest percentage rates in the U.S. for homeless people. In the 21st century, people raised in the U.S. are not taught about the struggles of homelessness and what they have to go through to survive; most people don’t plan on becoming homeless and became homeless due to the fluctuation in the market and various other problems. Also not only the homeless, but people in depth (people struggling to pay bills or drug addicts) and other people suffering also has to survive.
Throughout history there has always been a lower class society and some even lower than that which are known as the homeless. The homeless are people who don’t own homes or don’t live in their own home so they have to live in public places like shelters or even on the street. Homeless like to come out from the shadows and target the weak like a father with his daughter. They target specific groups so they know they can get money out of them easily instead of having to work for it. Homeless people are lazy to get jobs unless they are handed it so they would just sit down on their butts and do nothing until an opportunity comes to them. Homeless people are lazy and don’t want to work for themselves and have to get others to do their work for them because we think they are useless and therefore won’t do anything.
Many of the homeless may have faced a loss in society such as losing a job, losing a loved one, they may also have drug and alcohol addictions where they lose all their money and then do not have money to pay off their bare necessities. Some homeless may even have a mental illness not knowing how to deal with the world or they may just have been simply psychologically abused and abandoned by their loved
California currently faces the ominous blessing of the El Nino weather system, which promises to bring desperately needed rains in the form of storms and torrential rains. In preparation for these rains, California also has to address the homeless population, who will be stranded in the rains if adequate shelters are not provided for them. In his article, Sunnyvale: Fast-tracked Emergency Homeless Shelter Set To Open, Eric Kurhi cites expert opinions, utilizes emotional appeal, and employs rhetorical devices such as diction in order to provide information on the new homeless shelter opening in Sunnyvale while discussing the overall problem of homelessness.
...pisode of the HBO television series entitled Sex and the City, serves as a modern day example of this thought. The main character, Carrie Bradshaw, is evicted from her apartment while facing personal financial hardship, and upon realizing she no longer has anywhere to live, she states, “I’m homeless. I’ll be a bag lady. A Fendi bag lady, but a bag lady.”
Many of the homeless are women that have become divorced or have left home because of physical abuse. These women have no education because they have not been given the chance to go and get the education that it takes nowadays to get the job, so they are forced to live on the streets. They have no family to help them, and they are left with no other choice. People with mental illnesses also become homeless quite often. These people are incapable of handling the stress of living on their own.
When I think of homeless people, I give into the stereotype of these individuals as being lazy, having mental issues and usually holding up boxboard signs begging for money. Although these traits might be true, it’s easy to say “why not just get a job”, but there are so many different factors that contribute to this issue. Facing problems with transportation, having clean clothes for that workday, mental and physical health and many more attributions. This problem is important in today’s society because instead of giving the homeless a temporary fix such as giving them money or food, help them find a good homeless shelter or affordable housing. Teach them about budgeting which can go along with finding a career path so they can get out of the system.
This project conducted by Donley and Jackson took in 30 homeless men in the area and interviewed them individually to see how they downplay being homeless and if it is possible to feel welcome in certain communities (2011). The homeless interviewed said to want to have a clean appearance and want to fit it in but it is difficult especially in urban areas were gentrification is taking place. Furthermore, limited resources in those urban areas makes it difficult for the poor to have a clean appearance. All the men interview said they were well aware that their homeless status kept them alienated from the rest of the population. Many mention that they tried downplaying their homeless status in order not to get arrested for petty crimes, for example, dumpster diving or simply sitting on the sidewalks (2011). The stigmatization on homeless people give them an impression that they are worthless and to the eyes of the outsiders they are generalized as worthless as well. This research was short-term yet gave a great insight on not only how the homeless view themselves but how they believe other view them. They acknowledge that once a community is renovated it becomes more difficult to fit in and things like sitting in a side walk may cause you jail time (gentrification and “zero tolerance). The questions were simple which made interviewers express themselves more
Many people debate on weather homeless people should receive guidance or just be abandoned. Do homeless people deserve our service and to be supported, or are they just lazy individuals trying to take advantage of people? Homelessness is a growing dispute in cities. It has became an extensive problem for the community. Homelessness can not and should not be ignored. The number of homeless people in the United States is quickly growing. It seems like no one cares to help them. Even our heroes like police officers show no sympathy towards the homeless. “Homeless people appeared on the streets of Bucharest in 1990. Since then, their number and the problems created by this phenomenon have steadily increased in all major
The population of Los Angeles continues to grow each day because people perceive that the opportunities will improve their economic and social well-being. Most of them get good jobs manufacturing, business and the government giving them the ability to provide for themselves and their children. Those who are not lucky enough do not realise their goals and depend on the government and the society for basic needs. The effort of the city and the government to house the homeless cannot take the pressure of the rising number of the homeless without the support of the society. Los Angeles in the United State’s largest urban and has the highest number of homeless people making the task of housing its population next to impossible without participation
Walking down the streets of large cities it is common to see men, women, and sometimes even whole families laying beside buildings. Some people may ignore them and keep walking, some feel frightened, and some see the homeless as a human being and treat them like one. These people tend to be dirty, smelly, or they have a sad look that has overtaken their faces because of their struggle to survive. The people sleeping outside of buildings are homeless. Being homeless means not having anywhere to call home, although it also can mean living in a place that was never intended to house humans, such as a bus stop or a highway underpass. It is tempting to wedge the homeless together under a single label but there are an abundance of contrasting causes
Homelessness is everywhere, it is not a new trend and is a growing problem. Many people ask themselves should I help the homeless or not; it is easier to just ignore the problem than to give a helping hand. Every person needs help at one point or another in their life and homeless people should be no different. Assisting the homeless with healthcare, housing, and childcare are ways people are able to and should help the homeless.
