Introduction- Background Paragraph The word holocaust is defined as the destruction or slaughter in mass scales. The holocaust was a tragic event that occurred from 1933-1945 that took the lives of 6,000,000 - 11,000,000 Jewish people. Not many people survived the brutal treatment they received, those who did, shared their experiences through storytelling. Books such as “The Diary of a Young Girl” is a diary that a young girl, Anne Frank, kept while her family was in hiding and trying to survive the holocaust. Another book is “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”, it is a fictional book about a young boy living during the holocaust and accidentally being murdered in the concentration camps. Books, journals, or diaries about the holocaust events have now become a major part of life by influencing school systems and the way many may live their life. Anne Frank is one of the popular books that is read in schools and shared around the world. She was a young girl that was alive during the time of the holocaust, her family and herself were in hiding for sometime to avoid being forced into concentration camps. To make the time go by and more enjoyable, she would often write in her journal about what she was experiencing day to day. Unfortunately, her family was found and forced into concentration camps. Sadly, Anne frank did not survive, however, her father was the only survivor of their family. Her father, knowing that Anne had always wanted to be a writer, published her book about their experiences. Her book has become a huge influence and is read by many many schools every year. The diary of Anne Frank opens the reader's eyes to what families truly experienced during the holocaust. It is a raw and powerful message for everyone. Another book that was written to share someone's tragedies and heartbreaks that the holocaust caused is “The Girl in the Green Sweater”, written by Krystyna Chiger. This book is a tale of the horror that the author endured during the holocaust, from living in the sewer and the ghetto. The author and the last survivor of the family, shares the story of survival throughout the holocaust. Chiger sharing the experiences and horrors that were experienced, opens the public eye to how brutal the holocaust was.
