In “The Catcher In The Rye” by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield is faced with many adult conflicts that not every sixteen year old has to deal with in these early stages of life. Adult conflicts vary from money, to relationships, to making it in the real world. Holden’s state of mind isn’t exactly where it’s supposed to be and some of these factors put him in danger. Money, finding shelter, and dealing with people are all factors as Holden Caulfield grows mentally insane while finding his way home after being kicked out of another school.

Throughout the whole book Holden Caulfield has to maintain his money. As he wanders in New York hes required to spent money as he needs food and shelter but he also chooses to spend money on entertainment. In Chapter 7 right before Holden left school, he says “I don’t remember exactly how much I had, but I was pretty loaded.” when he is referring to counting his money (Salinger 52). As the story goes on Holden spends his money and is soon low to the point where he discusses running away and getting a job. Money plays a factor in this as well, if Holden doesn't have money he can’t stay at a hotel. Adults need to find shelter to survive, especially in the Winter when this story is taking place. In Chapter 23 Holden was looking for a place to stay and he says “He told me to come right over if I felt like it.” referring to Mr.Antolini offering Holden to stay at his apartment (Salinger 174). Things with Mr.Antolini don’t go how Holden planned for them to and this pushed Holden to an even worse state of mind. Most adults need to find shelter on their own when they leave their childhood home, but in Holden’s case he needs to find shelter to survive for a few days before he can go
