Holden in a very dynamic character,there’s many layers to his personality. In The Catcher in the Rye he's already shown multiple signs of a mental illness. Major depression is what holden is suffering from and doesn't know how to treat it and live with it.
Holden Caulfield has a classical case of major depression. In the article on Major depression, it states that “depressed mood most of the day,and loss in normal activities and relationships”(WebMd). With major depression you feel lost and worthless, you don't sleep at all, and significant weight loss or gain. This are all the symptoms Holden shows throughout the book. In The Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield never sleeps. He always tries to fall asleep but he has to force himself to do so. While he was on his little adventure to kill time he went to the old places he used to love. He stopped by the skating ring witch him and D.B. used to skate at and he remembered all the good times there. After all those great memories he looks at it now and only sees the phonies and all the bad about it. Major depression causes people to not enjoy activities they once loved to do.
Holden goes to museum of art and museum of history and tells us about his past and how the memories are now ruined by all the fake people. With depression he doesn't know why he's sad or hurting so he puts it off on other people like it's there fault he's unhappy in his life. Major depression is not uncommon especially in the circumstances that holden has been in.
