Ferdinand Marcos and Ninoy Aquino.
Two prominent figures in Philippine history that both made a mark in Philippine politics. The former was feared as a dictator while the latter was revered as a martyr. The dictator’s rule was considered as the darkest era of Philippine antiquity and the martyr served as the little ray of hope and peace for the Filipino people. The martyr was seen by the Filipino people as the most capable successor of the dictator, thus, after his US exile and upon his arrival at the airport, may Filipinos flocked to witness the arrival of a political hero. But that hero’s welcome never came to be, for the martyr was assassinated right after he marched out of the plane.

Yes, we can be proud of his death for it sprang forth the democratic hunger that we have as Filipinos. But, should we be proud of the fact that such meaningful death has not received justice for such a long time? Should we be proud if future generations would ask us the question. “Who is Ninoy’s murderer?”
The martyr was right that the “Filipino is worth dying for”. But the justice system is not. The justice system here is something that needs to be reformed in our country. Countless martyrs in Philippine politics may arise in the passage of time but if the justice system is as or more corrupt as it is today, maybe the Martyr was wrong all along of saying the his countrymen were all worth dying for. For it is the Filipino people, themselves, that could change the justice system.
As a Filipino, I still hope and pray that proper justice shall be served. Whether it may be for the martyr, an ordinary Filipino citizen, a successful businessperson, or a homeless beggar on the street, each and one of us should get the justice that we
