“The Gentilly Neighborhood”
While there are many neighborhoods in New Orleans, Gentilly is a large historical community. It is home to three universities. Dillard University, Southern University at New Orleans, and the University of New Orleans are located throughout the area (The Gentilly Neighborhood 1). Gentilly is a peaceful community which includes parks, historical neighborhoods, and golf courses (The Gentilly Neighborhood 1).
The Gentilly neighborhood began in the 1900s (Gentilly 1). The developers of the neighborhood were Michael Baccich, Edward E. Lafaye, and R.E. Edgar deMontluzin. They started planning out the neighborhood in 1909. Building drainage pumps was their first step of creating a neighborhood. Most of the homes are made up of craftsman bungalows, tudor cottages, and Mediterranean style homes (The Gentilly Neighborhood 1). Gentilly was built by piling up earth in shallow sections (Gentilly 1). The neighborhood itself sits on some of the highest land feet above sea level.
The name of the neighborhood “Gentilly” comes from a town in France named Chantilly. It means “in a gentle or noble manner” (Nugesser 1). Throughout the community you’ll see universities, parks, and food restaurants. Two historic neighborhoods are Holy Cross and Gentilly Terrace (The Gentilly Neighborhood 1). Dillard University came from the merge of New Orleans University and Straight College which occurred in 1935. Dillard University is named after James Hardy Dillard; he was appreciated for his work of educating African Americans (A Brief History of Dillard 1). Southern University at New Orleans opened its doors on September 21, 1959 ( The Beginning 1). University of N...

...h as men and boys used to hang out around the store and crime was nonstop. It wasn’t safe for kids to play at the playground due to the crime (Dall 1). There was a lot of littering, loitering, and heavy alcohol drinking going on around the store (Dall 1). After the store was torn down neighbors were happy because there was less problems. (Dall1).They no longer had to worry about the litter, crime, and guys hanging around. The children could play at the playground again. Everyone thought that development was a success.
Every neighborhood has both positive and negative situations. It is whom every choice to decide on where to live. Gentilly is a family neighborhood. Memories have been built here for centuries. It is one of the most historical places. It wouldn’t get any better than to live in a neighborhood that has great food, universities, and has tons of history.
There are many examples of cities reforming itself over time, one significant example is Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. More than a hundred years after the discovery of gold that drew thousands of migrants to Vancouver, the city has changed a lot, and so does one of its oldest community: Downtown Eastside. Began as a small town for workers that migrants frequently, after these workers moved away with all the money they have made, Downtown Eastside faced many hardships and changes. As a city, Vancouver gave much support to improve the area’s living quality and economics, known as a process called gentrification. But is this process really benefiting everyone living in Downtown Eastside? The answer is no. Gentrification towards DTES(Downtown Eastside) did not benefit the all the inhabitants of the area. Reasons are the new rent price of the area is much higher than before the gentrification, new businesses are not community-minded, and the old culture and lifestyle of the DTES is getting erased by the new residents.
Furthermore, he attempts to dispel the negative aspects of gentrification by pointing out how some of them are nonexistent. To accomplish this, Turman exemplifies how gentrification could positively impact neighborhoods like Third Ward (a ‘dangerous’ neighborhood in Houston, Texas). Throughout the article, Turman provides copious examples of how gentrification can positively change urban communities, expressing that “gentrification can produce desirable effects upon a community such as a reduced crime rate, investment in the infrastructure of an area and increased economic activity in neighborhoods which gentrify”. Furthermore, he opportunistically uses the Third Ward as an example, which he describes as “the 15th most dangerous neighborhood in the country” and “synonymous with crime”, as an example of an area that could “need the change that gentrification provides”.
The opening paragraph of the story contains a metaphorical passage: "I stared at it in the swinging light of the subway car, and in the faces and bodies of the people, and in my own face, trapped in the darkness which roared outside"(349). This reference is significant because it is a contrast to the dismal society that the narrator and his brother Sonny live in. The darkness is the portrayal of the community of Harlem that is trapped, in their surroundings by physical, economic, and social barriers. The obvious nature of darkness has overcome the occupants of the Harlem community. The narrator, an algebra teacher, observes a depressing similarity between his students and his brother, Sonny. This is true because the narrator is fearful for his students falling into a life of crime and drugs, as did his brother. The narrator notes that the cruel realities of the streets have taken away the possible light from the lives of his brother and his students. The narrator makes an insightful connection between the darkness that Sonny faced and the darkness that the young boys are presently facing. This is illustrated in the following quote:

New Orleans is a city in southern Louisiana, located on the Mississippi River. Most of the city is situated on the east bank, between the river and Lake Pontchartrain to the north. Because it was built on a great turn of the river, it is known as the Crescent City. New Orleans, with a population of 496,938 (1990 census), is the largest city in Louisiana and one of the principal cities of the South. It was established on the high ground nearest the mouth of the Mississippi, which is 177 km (110 mi) downstream. Elevations range from 3.65 m (12 ft) above sea level to 2 m (6.5 ft) below; as a result, an ingenious system of water pumps, drainage canals, and levees has been built to protect the city from flooding.
Music is something that defines New Orleans. It separates our city from other major cities in the country. Specifically, marching bands have a huge impact on the city as a whole. While New Orleans is full of many cultures there is one that sticks out in the black community and that is marching bands. Marching bands give the black community a strong identity and New Orleans one as well. Marching bands play a bigger impact on African American influence more than anything.
Today I’am Writing about Baton Rouge Louisiana because it’s a Historical/College town grown over a poor neighborhood with lots of intensions. Baton Rouge Louisiana is Very Nice and Loving place and what’s better it’s a state Capital. I’ve never visited a state capital so it would be fun to explorer this wonderful place with wonderful things to share and Learn About. Did you know that Baton Rouge was visited by the Marquisde Lafayette as part of his triumphant tour of the United States and the town made him the quest of honor at a banquette and ball to celebrate the Occasion?
I am a huge history geek and since this place has more multicultural and multilingual individuals, there is bound to be a fair amount of history. In New Orleans, I have counted more than ten museums that I would really like to visit and learn more about how New Orleans got its basis of foundation. The museums that I would especially be interested in going to is the National World War II Museum, the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, the Museum of Death, and the Southern Food and Beverage Museum. There are of course a numerous number of other museums, but there are just too many for me to name. I know that I would be happy to learn and gain a little knowledge of a place that I know little
Bourbon Street known as rue bourbon in French sits in the heart of one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans called the French Quarters. I called Bourbon Street an all-night party. Most people come from all around the world to enjoy the festivities. They also have locals that will go on Bourbon to have a nice time. Bourbon Street can also be like Halloween, you do not know if you are getting a trick or treat.
Where y’at Nola? In New Orleans that means what’s up or where are you. I come from a New Orleans background. My entire family was born and raised in New Orleans, sadly I was not. At the age of six,my family and I relocated to Arkansas after Hurricane Katrina. Although I barely remember living there I am still able to embrace my New Orleans culture thanks to my family. The best part about our culture is the cajun food. My grandmother continues to cook cajun food as if we were still back home. The New Orleans Boil is one meal that my grandmother cooks that brings my entire family together. This meal has a lot of meaning in our family .
Criminal activities such as sexual assaults, murders, arson and the dumping of dead bodies. The homes in the French Quarter and surrounding areas of New Orleans have also been defaced by vandalism and graffiti. Blighted homes are hindering the neighborhood because of the ugly writings and spray painting on the building and even shattered glass from young kids. Many times they can have splattered paint over the property of homeowners. This is very disgraceful and heartbreaking for the homeowners who have invested their time and hard earned money, and they pay taxes for area. Now the homeowners and neighbors are left with the cleanup of trying to restore the beauty of what was once their before the criminals destroyed the beauty of their homes by their uncontrollable
When people hear stories about Louisiana, they automatically think they are taking place in New Orleans. However, my story takes place in northern Louisiana in a small city called Monroe. I was born in Bastrop, a small town right outside of Monroe. Growing up, Monroe was my favorite place. I didn’t think anywhere else would be as cool as this city itself. I made many memories in the small city, some of which I’ll share with you.
Where I live is one of the greatest neighborhoods in the city to live in; however it does have its draw backs. Importantly it has nearly everything a resident might want, beautiful picturesque scenery, proximity to shopping, and many of the cultural centers. Nevertheless the roads can be some of the most congested in town, and the streets are not safe to walk late at night.
