Where Did Baseball Originate
Baseball is a game of bat and ball played between two teams of nine players each taking turns to bat or field. The team that is batting have a player on the home plate who hits the ball that the opposing team’s pitcher throws, then runs anti-clockwise and back to the Homeplate as the fielding team tries to catch the ball and throw it back before the batting player makes a complete run. The teams with the highest number of runs at the end of nine innings win. Baseball is popular in the US and Canada and has been spreading steadily to other regions in this century. Many people believe that baseball evolved from the rounders game that was popular in Great Britain and still popular among children across many African countries and, evidently, the fundamental ideas of the two seem to link. 1744 ‘s British publication, A Little Pretty Pocket-Book, describes a similar game in a triangular field of play and not the diamond field of today and with posts instead of ground bases. 1749 records show that the Prince of Wales played the game and on Easter Monday of 1755 English Lawyer William Bray recorded another game. Sports historians believe that English immigrants brought the game to North America through Canada. The first known mention of Baseball was in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1791 and by the 1830s, North America started recording several versions of baseball.
Commission of Inquiry into the Origin of Baseball
Henry Chadwick published an article in 1903 explaining how baseball came from rounders game popular in Britain. Believing that baseball is a US invention, Albert Spalding convinced Chadwick that they jointly appoint a commission of inquiry to establish the truth behind the origin of baseball. Abraham Mills headed the commission for three years and concluded that the Abner Doubleday, a Civil War hero, invented baseball. This conclusion, 15 years after Doubleday had died, anointed him as the father of baseball.

[1] Baseball is America’s favorite pastime. When people hear the word "America," they think of apple pie, meat and potatoes, July 4th, and inevitably the everlasting love of this country, baseball. The credit is given to a man named Alexander J. Cartwright, who drew up a set of rules for a game played with a bat, a round ball, and a glove. Along with the rules came a sketching of a diamond-shaped field on which the game was to be played. The rules that Cartwright wrote up in 1845 may have very well changed somewhat, but the game of baseball has remained remarkably constant throughout history into today.
Baseball has homegrown roots here in America. Starting in 1839 it instantly became a phenomenon that still captures American hearts and attention spans today. The Japanese created their own league called the Nippon Professional Baseball in 1920. Though they borrowed the idea and sport, there are key differences in how the game is played on the tiny island nation. In true Japanese fashion, they took an idea making innovations and improvements to create something resembling the past but yet having differences to stand on its own.
Baseball has been of the longest living sports in our world today. The game started with the idea of a stick and ball and now has become one of the most complex sports known in our society. Several rules and regulations have been added to help enhance the game for everyone. Although baseball has endured several issues during its history and development of the game the game has still been a success throughout the world.
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Major League Baseball, much like the majority of other American institutions, was racially segregated. A color barrier was implemented during baseball’s infancy in order to separate people of different race to cater to the white American players. The color barrier was an unofficial “rule” that hindered those with dark skin from playing baseball for Major League teams. The color barrier was enforced by preventing any teams with a colored player from competing at the professional level. Many team owners, umpires, and players justified their opposition to allowing blacks to play by declaring that only whites could uphold the "gentlemanly character" of professional baseball. Others argued that excluding blacks would prevent future racial resentment between the ethnicities, as players of different races would be competing for the same job opportunities.
Baseball is a unique sport in many different ways. It is the only major competitive sport that has no time limit. The success of a player is determined on how well he can play as an individual and how well the team plays along with him. There are many rules that determine the success of a player’s performance. A baseball game is played with two teams and each team is permitted 25 players per team; however this is only true for professional teams. There are three parts to baseball: offense, pitching, and defense.
If baseball had relatives, town ball would be its first cousin. It was so similar , and by 1800 townball was played everywhere. The only difference was that town ball did not have rules, and people were getting away with more than they would if they was playing baseball. Someone thought that not having rules for a game was not fair, so he sat down and thought of some rules and that’s how baseball came about. His name was Albert Doubleday. Baseball is a competitive sport, and so many people that play this sport wants to be in the spotlight all the time. 1744, the ball flies in the air and the boy runs to the home plate and they have scored a point. Of course, he feels that he is great at that sport, and so does his friends around him. When a team feels as though they are doing well, it brings great joy to them.
Since the sport first emerged, baseball and America have shared the same values, responded to the same events, and struggled with the same social and economic issues. To learn of the ideals concerning the sport of baseball in America, is to know the heart and mind of America. Baseball developed before the Civil War but did not achieve professional status until the 1870s (The Baseball Glove, 2004). In 1871, the National Association of Professional Baseball Players was formed. Unfortunately, the organization ran into financial hardships and was abandoned in 1875.
The history of baseball has made cultures in America come together more than any other sport. It brings cities together to watch a common game known as “The American Pastime”, but the game is changing along with the world around us. Are the changes good or bad? One thing is for sure through all this. Baseball has become interesting along with being informative.
Baseball was based on the English game of rounders. Rounders becomes popular in the United States in the early 19th century, where the game was called "townball", "base", or "baseball". Cartwright formalized the modern rules of baseball. The first recorded baseball game in 1846 when Alexander Cartwright's Knickerbockers lost to the New York Baseball Club. The game was held at the Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1858, the National Association of Base Ball Players, the first organized baseball league was formed.

A travel of over 3000 miles for some, a 210 mile drive for me, just to arrive at the biggest gathering of over 1,500 twelve year olds; all just to play baseball. The only place that would be suitable for such an event is Cooperstown Dream Parks, every baseball players heaven. Cars have come to Cooperstown from everywhere for this week long tournament. I met children my age from all over the United states. I became friends with kids from Ohio, Illinois, California, I even met a player from Puerto Rico who barely spoke any english. The windows of everyone 's car decorated with the names and numbers of teams and players. Excited baseball teams spill from their Barracks and hustle toward the already crowded seating area. As a little kid, I think everyone has had a dream or goal to become a professional ball player or celebrity. The reason kids set these goals, because it is considered cool to be a professional ball player or celebrity. Also, those careers pay a lot of money for the things people love to do: play. For some, they do not care what it will take for them to achieve those goals and dreams. My dream was to become a professional baseball player, but I needed to focus on my education more.

It wasn’t until the Civil War the popularity of the game spread, and both Union and Confederate soldiers played baseball during lulls in the fighting. After Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, soldiers from both the Army of Northern Virginia (Confederate) and the Army of the Potomac (Union) played baseball. During the bloodiest war in our countries history Baseball was there to help the two sides heal. It was another fourteen years till 1879 when Football would be invented.
