Hispanic American students are stuck with the stereotype that they have the tendencies to be emotionally troubled and violent and may be slow learners, which is often associated with the frustrations of being English language learners. They often live in inner city areas where schools are staffed with teachers that lack experience or lack funds to upgrade to materials that are current and up-to-date. Best practice with Hispanic American students is to evaluate the learners as individuals. Validate culture, language, and instill trust in teachers and the education system. A variety of religions are recognized and practiced among the Asian community. They are primarily Buddhist, but have a strong presence in the Catholic and Taoist world, while others still practice the teachings of Confucius. Religion is a freedom Americans (of any culture or race) are at liberty to pursue anywhere in the country. Though it is not taught in American schools, it does occasionally overflow into areas of education. Educators must be aware of what may affect a child’s ability to learn, including religion. Though most Americans find the strict, honor-bound practices archaic, Asian Americans see it as a way to keep the family honorable and in-sync. They value and care for family needs above the needs of the individual which could affect a student’s performance. Depending on the country of origin within the culture, you may also see differences such as physical contact between the same sex is permissible, but contact between members of the opposite sex is inappropriate.
