WWII was one of the most widespread and deadly wars in history, involving over thirty countries. The main participants were the Axis powers: Germany, Italy, and Japan, and the Allies: France, Great Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union. WWII was set off in 1939 with Hitler’s invasion of Poland, dragging on for six destructive years, filled with atrocities, turmoil, conflict, and turning tides. Japan looked as though they were going to fight until the last man standing, but the war finally slowed down when the Allies defeated the Axis powers of Nazi Germany, Japan and Italy in 1945 with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. People were incinerated and families destroyed. People were suffering and confused and scrambling to survive, and the American government did not give them ample time to even think of where to go from there. Ultimately, though eventually these two bombings proved to be effective, justification through location was lacking and the shock and loss Japanese civilians had to go through was not worth it. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was both an unethical and unjust decision, based solely on the amount of people that were killed, were injured, and the lasting health related ramifications on the population of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Referring to the previous numbers, an estimated 237,000 people were killed by the first cumulative bombing and aftershock of Hiroshima. Similarly, but not as numerous, an estimated 80,000 were killed from the bombing, radiation sickness, and other such injuries. The amount of horror that these people experienced was astronomical. Yoshitaka Kawamoto was thirteen years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
