Management Goals
In order to achieve my mission statement I need to create realistic goals to obtain a positive and student centered learning environment. My mission statement as a high school physical education teacher is to educate students on how to become physically literate, which will in turn, motivate my students to take responsibility of their health and adopt habits that support a healthy wellbeing. The goals to support that are to establish a set of rules that protect my students emotionally and physically, to create a lesson in which every student can succeed, and to produce a positive learning environment. High school students’ priorities consist of what their friends think and wanting to do things their way. A strategy to accomplish establishing the rules while also giving my students autonomy is to allow them to help create the rules and consequences for their actions. By doing so, students will know what to expect when they behave in a certain way and with me approving the rules I will be able to incorporate every rule I want for the classroom. Allowing students to have a say in the rules gives them responsibility, which is the second strategy I plan to use to achieve my first goal. Holding my students accountable in regards to breaking the rules will let them know that the rules are important and will build a mutual respect between them and myself. My last strategy to obtain my first goal is to never be bias with students. Students in high school want to be treated fairly. Each student is different but the set of rules will cover a broad range of students’ personalities. For example, writing on the poster two different consequences of the same degree for one action. A positive learning environment is a place where students learn through enhanced motivation. I want students to know that I recognize and appreciate the effort that they put forth in class. My first strategy for achieving this goal is to use positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement gives the student motivation to continue doing what has been asked and other students’ motivation to do what has been asked properly. Students do not like to be scolded and teachers would become exhausted if they constantly focused on the negatives of a situation. My second strategy would be to have a routine that students know but is broad enough to remember. I do not want to have a complex routine for each day of the week that students can get confused. This will lead to frustration for them and myself if they cannot follow directions. The last strategy is to personally get to know my students. By having an idea of their personal background I will have better insight on how they view the world around them and why they may act in a certain

I believe every student is entitled to a safe learning environment where they can reach their full potential academically and behaviorally. Students will reach their full potential in a positive learning environment. The positive learning environment will be established from the beginning of the year providing a lasting impact on the students academic, and behavior performance throughout the entire year. The positive learning environment will be a classroom setting, which allows students to feel welcomed, safe, and important on daily basis allowing learning to occur to its fullest potential. To ensure my students are in a positive learning environment there must be a behavior management plan clearly explaining the expectations I have for my students. Throughout my behavior management plan I will explain how I plan to implement expectations so students act accordingly. My behavior management plan will be individually tailored to my students allowing me to push them to their fullest potential to by taking into consideration each student’s behavior and personal needs.
In conclusion, I feel like the most important thing I can do to create a positive learning environment is model all of the behaviors I expect my kids to learn and be able to model themselves. My kids should be able to learn appropriate and inappropriate behaviors from the skills they acquired from watching models. My children must be motivated and feel as though they can learn and model the behaviors presented, or they will never try to reach any type of goals set before them. Overall, I want to increase their self-efficacy so they feel they can achieve goals I have set before them or ones they have made themselves.
A role a child takes within the family home can explain the children’s behavior within an educational setting. Educators can provide children the opportunity to partake in different roles to further expand their learning. Rules exist at home and school for children to follow. It is imperative that as an educator you take time to explain in depth the rules of your classroom to children and the child’s family. As various results show that rules can be tied to culture, therefore, you want to ensure no rules within your classroom setting are creating conflict for the child or their family.
As explained in the FYT, “consistency is one of the most important tools you have in preventing problems” since it provides students with boundaries for their expected behavior (Thompson, 434). Once being able to manage consistency in my classroom by practicing the guidelines suggested by Thompson (e.g. being prepared, reteaching rules, avoiding idle threats, etc.), a positive outcome is that students will have a set of expectations that they are less likely to break since they will be aware that there is no tolerance for misbehavior in the classroom. On the other hand, students may feel the need to challenge the ongoing consistency and rebel against rules to see how far they can get into getting what they want.
I am interested in joining the Honors College at Purdue because it is a collection of motivated and bright students that receive significant opportunities to reach their full potential. The mission of the honors college, as stated online, is to create and foster well-rounded, well-educated global leaders. The four pillars of interdisciplinary academics, leadership development, undergraduate research, and community and global experiences establish the mission statement. In the first week of school, I establish my authority and I clearly and explicitly express my classroom and outside the classroom procedures that will be followed and the rights that every student has in the classroom. One thing that does not work in our school-wide support committee is students not being responsible for their own actions. For instance, we have a big number of students that do not complete assignments in the classroom. Sometimes I go to the restroom and I observe students not flushing the toilet or throwing trash outside the trash can and I have to talk to them about being a responsible person. Another expectation that we need to improve in our school is students not respecting each other and not respecting other’s property. For instance, last year, there were many incidents about students not respecting other’s property and not being polite to their peers. In our district, we also need to improve on how to deal with the negative behavior of students in the classroom and stop sending them to the office or ISS (In-School-Suspension) because if students are sent out of the classroom because of inappropriate behavior, they are losing instruction in all their classes. These are not effective ways to handle student’s disruptions in the classroom; therefore, educators need to establish a learning environment that will decrease disruptions and increase student’s learning. By creating an open, caring environment students are more likely to take risks, and to develop the understanding that it is ok to fail and try again.
