High Risk Behaviors
Both the Mexican and Polish cultures participate in the high risk behaviors of consuming large qualities of alcohol followed by the use of the illegal substance of cannabis. Although these societies prefer similar substances the rationale behind their taking part in these high risk behaviors are very different. The Mexican culture tends to be very festive where the use of substances is typically encircled around social gatherings. In contrast, the abuse of alcohol is long standing in the Polish in order to address the many hardships in life. In Poland, a high rate of alcoholic psychosis, cirrhosis of the liver and acute alcohol poisoning exists (Purnell & Paulanka, 2008).
Nutrition, Pregnancy and Childbearing
The preparation and flavor of food in Mexico can vary significantly based on the region. The basis of most cuisine is rice, beans, meats, and vegetables served with either flour or corn tortillas. Dining is considered a time for socialization with varying mealtimes that can begin late into the evening. Depending on the people, their socioeconomic status can influence the availability and nutritional value of food in certain areas of Mexico. Due to geographical and climate limitations the Polish food choices are limited to potatoes, vegetables, meats and dairy products. All of which may be changed depending the growing season that can have a significant impact of food availability. The Polish American diet is frequently high in carbohydrates, sodium, and saturated fat (Purnell & Paulanka, 2008). Lessons Learned
Integrating information from this week’s reading assignment was a challenge as it relates to the Polish culture. This is primarily due to the lack of predominance of this culture in this ill geographical region which is approximately 1%. After review of the current resources available to staff, it was identified there were no materials to serve as a guide to caring for people from the Polish heritage. There were limited written patient education resources to serve as a direct staff in providing services to people from the Mexican heritage. Revisions of this overall staff resource manual pertaining to providing care for both of these populations will be a future project based on the information obtained throughout this course.
The increase and changing demography in the United State today, with the disparities in the health status of people from different cultural backgrounds has been a challenge for health care professionals to consider cultural diversity as a priority. It is impossible for nurses and other healthcare professionals to learn and understand theses diversity in culture, but using other approaches like an interpreter is very helpful for both nurses and patients. In this paper of a culturally appropriate care planning, I will be discussing on the Hispanic American culture because, I had come across a lot of them in my career as a nurse. The Hispanic are very diverse in terms of communication and communities and include countries like Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, South and Central America, and some of them speak and write English very well, some speaks but can’t write while some can’t communicate in English at all but Spanish.

From humble beginnings to global acknowledgment, the diffusion of Hispanic cuisine and some of it’s signature dishes will be analyzed under domestic and foreign context. In some cultures, there are situations that involves drinking. These include: birthday parties, New Year’s festivities, graduations, weddings receptions, Fourth of July, Christmas and Mardi Gras. In these holidays, people usually drink in excess to have a good time and celebrate. Different countries specialize in different types of alcohol, such as: the Italian have really good wine, Mexico is known for beer and tequila, Ireland is famous for beer and whiskey, Japan has their own beverage called Sake, and the United States is known for beer, wine, and whiskey. In these cultures, drinking alcohol is an acceptable type of celebration that teenagers even participate in. Not all alcohol consumed is in celebration. Therefore, “the top 20 percent of drinkers consume approximately 30 percent of all alcohol drunk over a 12-month period” (Grant 290).
One of the greatest influences of Mexican food was the Aztecs in the fourteenth century. Some of the foods they ate are still eaten today and some are even staples of the Mexican diet. Corn, corn tortillas, beans, and avocados are significant to Mexican food. Another major influence was the Spanish conquistadores from the fifteenth to nineteenth century. They brought various foods and ways of cooking that were used in Europe. They taught the locals to cook with wine, garlic, and onions. The conquistadors also introduced imported beef and cheese, which is another staple in Mexican food. The most important product the Spaniards brought was rice, changing the way Mexicans have eaten, making it a key component to the diet and culture of Mexico. Like all of the other ingredients and recipes concocted by the Aztecs and conquistadores, these foods and techniques are still used frequently today.
These services are provided by medical professionals serving U.S. citizens striving to provide the best possible care, but just as we have had a growth of medical knowledge the U.S. population has changed drastically. Minorities should no longer be overlooked as they are the new prospering culture in this day and age, especially for the Hispanic/ Latino people. As a result there has been a shift, a blend, and a creation of new cultures. It is imperative that medical professionals learn to understand culture. Failure to understand this thriving ethnic group can lead to complications such as ineffective communication, loss of trust between patient and medical personnel, and failure to provide proper treatment. That is why it is important to find ways to help Hispanics feel at ease when visiting any medical facility for service.

Nurses might be surprised to know how many people from the German culture are in the United States. For the health professional it is especially important to know what health care concerns might be specific to the German-American patient. They also need to be informed because of German travelers who might be visiting or temporarily living in another country and are in need of care. According to the United States Census Bureau, (2012) out of the 307,007,000 people in the United states, the majority ancestry group comprising the population is German. There are 50,708,000 people whose ancestry was of German descent, (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). In the United States there are a lot of cultural influences that come from Germany for this reason. It is important to remember that according to the US census Bureau, (2012) 1,109,216 people in the United States who are able to speak English also speak German. The current paper will give an overview of the German culture, a presentation of the six components of the Giger and Davidhizar Transcultural Assessment Model, and an explanation of how the nurse can incorporate these important key points in their daily patient care to provide optimum health care for a German patient.
For instance, meals in Spain are eaten at different times than meals in the U.S. Breakfast in Spain is at 8:00 am and most people enjoy a pastry and coffee. At 11:00 am, a mid-morning snack of spanish tortilla is eaten. Then, at 2:00 pm a large three course lunch is served. This meal might consist of a starter salad, a meat plate, and coffee or pudding for dessert. At 5:30 pm, children will enjoy fresh fruit or a churro with hot chocolate. Finally, at 9:30 pm a light dinner is eaten consisting of a salad, sandwich, or a selection of tapas. In Latin America, foods that many Americans may consider bizarre, are considered delicacies. Some of these include: cow tongue, pork feet, grasshoppers, corn fungus, and Mondongo, a stew made out of tripe which is cow stomach. Additionally, children in Spain often have an after school snack consisting of fruit, yogurt, or a sweet pastry. Today when people move across continents with the help of technology their culture and heritage moves along with them. Almost each and every continent is populated with people from different nations who have diverse traditions and cultures. Thus knowledge of health traditions and culture plays a vital role in nursing. People from different cultures have a unique view on health and illness. Culture-specific care is a vital skill to the modern nurse, as the United States continues to consist of many immigrants who have become assimilated into one culture. I interviewed three families of different cultures: - Indian (my culture), Hispanic and Chinese. Let us see the differences in health traditions between these cultures.

Alcohol and drug abuse is one of biggest problems in United States today. It is not only a personal problem that dramatically affects individuals' lives, but is a major social problem that affects society as whole. "Drug and alcohol abuse", these phrases we hear daily on the radio, television or in discussions of social problem. But what do they mean or what do we think and understand by it? Most of us don't really view drug or alcohol use as a problem, if that includes your grandmother taking two aspirins when she has a headache or your friends having few beers or drinks on Saturday night. What we really mean is that some drugs or alcohol are being used by some people or in some situations constitute problem with which our society must deal. It becomes a real problem when using or I should say abusing drugs cause accidents, antisocial behavior, broken relationships, family instability, crime and violence, poverty, unsafe streets and highways, worker absenteeism and nonproductivity, and the most tragic one death. The situation in which the drug or alcohol uses accurse often makes all the difference. The clearest example is the drinking of alcohol, when individual begins to drink during the job, at school, or in the morning, we have evidence that indicates a potential drinking problem. If a person takes narcotic drug because he just wrecked his knee while his physician prescribed playing football and the drug, most of us would be not concerned. If, on the other hand, he took the same drug on his own just because he likes the way it makes him feel, then we should begin to worry about him developing dependence. Even use of illegal drugs are sometimes acceptable, but it also depends on situation, for example in some countries smoking marijuana is legal just like drinking alcohol in United States. Some subcultures even in United States that accept the use of illegal drugs may distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable situation, some college age groups might accept marijuana smoking at a party on weekends, but not just before going to a calculus class. Most of people would accept a fact that a bartender or a waiter who is working at a night club is having a beer or a drink on his break or that a landscape worker is having a cold beer with his lunch on a hot summer day.
