Hero's Journey-Mulan
Heros can be called many different names: he or she can be a boy, girl, or anything else. There is one thing Heros all have in common. Heros all have a goal to help someone that means so much to him or her. Mulan is a hero in her own, unique way. She wants only to protect her father from harm and is ready putting herself in danger to do that. Mulan starts her journey wanting to protect her dad, and goes through many different tasks with the help of her friend, Mushu, in order to do just that. In her call to adventure, Mulan can not help but try her best to protect her dad and his honor. When Mulan goes off to protect her father, a small dragon, Mushu, goes after Mulan in order to help make sure she stays safe. “I am the guardian of lost souls. I am the powerful, the pleasurable, the indestructible, Mushu!“(Mulan). Mushu wants to protect Mulan and in turn protects her family name. Mushu made Mulan's journey much easier by helping her with every task a man was expected to be good at. Mushu encouraged Mulan not to quit and to get better than everyone else at the simple tasks. Mulan is, and always has been, a hero in her own way. She goes off to war with nothing but her own will to protect who she loves pushing her forwards. In Walt Disney Pictures’ Mulan, Disney attempts to retell the story of Chinese heroine, Hua Mulan, who is described in the Chinese poem, The Ballad of Mulan .The legend begins by telling the story an old man, who has no elder sons, who has been called up to fight in the Chinese army. Knowing that her father will likely face death, Mulan concedes to fight in his place and pretend to be a man, unbeknownest to her fellow soldiers. The movie builds off this premise as we are told the fictional account of Mulan’s life from before she took her father’s place to after.

Yes, Mulan is an unorthodox heroine who changes all the rules, but she does so by conforming to a flawed system and affecting change from the inside, under the guise of a man. In lieu of doing it as a woman, it is not as girl power filled as many of us would like to believe. She, for the most part, affects all of this change as a man. Once she’s discovered, all her hard work in the training and the relationships she’s forged are all tossed to the wind and she’s quickly relegated back to her place as a lowly woman. However, despite its flawed execution in being a girl power story, it embodies a quintessential feel-good, be true to your heart film that will leave you wanting to affect change in the world around you.
A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Although he is looked up to Odysseus is not a hero because he is selfish and disobedient. He has gotten advice from many but has not followed them leading many of his men into death.

The definition and guidelines for using the term “hero” to describe a person can be as diverse as the land we live in, however, regardless of your cultural identity the shield of “hero” must be earned. It is defined as “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities, is regarded as a model or ideal (Dictionary.com, 2014). In Classical Mythology, a hero is “a being of godlike prowess, a warrior of special strength, courage or ability” (Dictionary.com, 2014). This describes how we have portrayed our present day heroes, the pedestal that we put them on, after actions reflecting heroism, have been awarded the title. Difficult to earn, harder to retain, but forever remembered.
A hero could be anyone. A hero could be an ordinary person who has impacted someone or has inspired a change toward greatness in their life. A hero can be passive or active, famous or ordinary, rich or poor. What gives a hero a distinct similarities to other heroes and distinguish them from non heroes is their ability to influence others that they are extraordinary because of their means to overcome obstacles, defeated adversities, and still manage to be a leader, role model, or an admirable person within society.
But her beauty lies in her strength, for her bright smile, and strong eyes are what stay the same between Mulan and Ping, her disguised identity as a solider. She is drawn slender with fair skin, round face, rosy cheeks, pink lips, and long straight black hair with a strand in the middle of her forehead. Throughout her films (Mulan (1998), Mulan II (2001)), Mulan wore a range of outfits, from beautiful Hanfus (Chinese dresses) to her soldier's getup, though her most notable outfit is a simple Hanfu, which consisted of a creamy green-yellow dress, with blue over shirt, which has green sleeves, and a red band around her waist. She also sports kung fu styled soldier's outfit, as well as her pink matchmaker's Hanfu and her father's armor (“Mulan” 1). In the film, except to go to the matchmaker, Mulan does not to wear any makeup or anything to beautify her appearance but, even without anything to enhance her looks, Mulan is naturally beautiful
Mulan tells that the story of brave Mulan. Mulan did not want her elderly father to fight in the war, so she disguised as a man and joined in her father 's army. Finally, Mulan defeated the Huns and Shan Yu (leader of the Huns) with her partners in barracks. This Disney film portrays the conflict perspective, feminism, and symbolic interaction perspective.
What is a hero? Is a hero someone that is the same for each person, or is it for each person different? Does someone’s hero depend on their perspective? Do all heroes need superpowers or something that puts them above the regular human? While those are arguable one thing is for sure heroes are based of heroism, and heroism is “Great Bravery” as defined by google. A hero is anyone who shows great bravery and is uses courage, a hero can be anybody, there is no true definition of what a true hero, and because it could all change because of your point of view or perspective.

The film Mulan retold the story of a woman warrior who took her father’s place in battle and became a savior of China.The movie uses many elements from the original story told in the chapter “White Tigers,” but adds many modern twists in order to make the story more appealing for a newer generation. In both stories of Fa Mu Lan the elements of sacrifice, silence and voice, cultural practices of ancestor worship and filial piety, and Chinese stereotypes are present.
A hero is a person who cedes to benefit others. Through many complications that were faced they stood up with the greatest bravery. Welles Crowther is a great example of a hero who sought to help the other people in the World Trade Center during 9/11. Though he could’ve saved himself he tried to save others. Though he lost his life he inspired others to help others in need. Ling Young says,”He said,”I’m going back up again.” Cause he knows that there were a lot of people still up there on the 78th floor that needed help (“The Man in the Red Bandana”). Overall, the Disney movie, Mulan, demonstrates gender roles, socialization of gender roles, and consequences of breaking the gender roles. By Mulan going to war for her father, in China, many things were at risk, life, honor, and the country of China, itself. Displaying the characteristics a man had was the only way for Mulan to survive, granted, she was not great at displaying woman characteristics in the first place. Being caught in war, as a woman, meant death, but Mulan was lucky for her bravery when saving Captain Li Shang, for he spared her life, which allowed Mulan to help save China and the emperor in the end. Even though China had very strict gender roles, Mulan broke them to save her father’s life and became the person she was meant to be.
A hero is characterized as any person who is admired for their courage or achievements, thus serving as a model. Some other characteristics associated with a hero are bravery and daring. It is the manner of facing and dealing with anything that is recognized as dangerous, difficult, or painful that further defines a hero.
Webster’s New World dictionary gives one definition of a hero as “the central figure in any important event or period, honored for outstanding qualities.” Anyone you ask can name someone they view as their hero (from a parent, sports figure, fictional superhero, to a movie star) but very few people would actually define the word hero the same. A good general definition of a hero is a person who is idealized or admired for outstanding achievements, courage, bravery, noble qualities, and unselfish acts for others (Goins, 2012).
In the Disney film Mulan, the character for Mulan plays an important part to support the example of a woman not satisfied with her state of being and subordinated position in society and therefore, takes action to show others her true capabilities and qualities. This prototype is scarcely depicted in today’s cartoons and films so that children rarely identify with this image. “Mulan” helps to promote this role model of an intelligent woman and could be the first step in breaking gender constraints. In addition, it might teach children that they have to find their own state of happiness rather than trying desperately to fulfill society’s expectations.
