A hero is characterized as any person who is admired for their courage or achievements, thus serving as a model. Some other characteristics associated with a hero are bravery and daring. It is the manner of facing and dealing with anything that is recognized as dangerous, difficult, or painful that further defines a hero.
A primary example of a hero is the courageous men and women, many of whom are employed in a regular non-military job and have spouses and children at home, who are sacrificing their lives while fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These soldiers are very brave despite the grave circumstances while performing their military service duty.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January of 2008 and continued acting until 2009, when he became too ill. While working on “The Beast”, “Swayze opted not to use painkilling drugs because they would have taken the edge off his performance”. Patrick Swayze was a hero in the 1987 film, Dirty Dancing. Patrick insisted on always doing his own stunts, and this same courage was waged in his battle with cancer.
As a further explanation, a hero is not any person, but rather a person who is admired for their courage or for the things that they have achieved. Also, a hero is not an animal, as so many people like to think, because they lack heroic attributes.
In essence, the soldiers, Senator John McCain, and Ted Kennedy all exhibit heroism because they boldly faced danger and pain, and are honored for their courage and achievements. Other heroic attributes are daring and fearlessness depicted by the pilots who crash-landed their plane, the Captain Richard Phillips hostage incident, and Patrick Swayze’s war with cancer. Webster’s dictionary defines a hero as any man admired for his courage, qualities or exploits, especially in war. Some people attribute the term hero mostly to war. My personal definition of a hero is someone who takes a stand against evil or an unjust cause. The term hero can be applied to anyone, it isn’t necessary to save the world from explosion to be a hero. The act of standing up for a friend can also be called a heroic act.
Generally when you think of a hero, who do you envision? Most likely, you picture a strong and imposeing figure, someone capable of performing in high pressure situations, demonstrating bravery and passion to help his/her fellow man. Those who typically fit that role in society are firefighters, policemen, and soldiers. Those people deserve all the credit and recognition they receive for their courageous acts. However, what about individuals or groups who aren’t necessarily on the “frontlines” physically protecting others and saving lives, but who work extremely hard to improve the lives of others in some way? These everyday people deserve credit as well. After all, to the people they help, these volunteers or activists are heroes. An example of such a group is the Greensboro Four, a few African American college students in the early 1960s who helped change the landscape of segregation in the Jim Crow South.

Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Being a hero means to be willing to risk your life for others. Such as, Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman was a fantastic football player and he loved playing it too. Despite that, Pat Tillman turned down a 3.6million dollar contract to the Arizona Cardinals to go fight the war against terrorism. He ended up dieing from friendly fire. All this goes to show how brave Pat Tillman was to risk his life and give up his football career to go fight in Afghanistan to help protect the American people. What is the definition of a hero? A hero is an ordinary person who finds strength to persevere and endure, in spite of, overwhelming obstacles. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, Ralph, a ordinary 12 year old boy, is elected chief over an island with no adults and no way home. Ralph is considered a hero because he makes difficult choices for the group and overcomes many obstacles , such as keeping the fire going. In the epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus, a king of Ithaca, is called to battle in Troy and faces many challenging creatures on his way home such as Cyclops, Calypso, being turned into pigs, and many more. Odysseus is a hero because he perseveres and overcomes the obstacles and makes it home to his family.
What makes a hero? To me a hero is a person that does whatever is necessary to protect the people they’re serving or protecting. In the dictionary it says a hero is “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.”

A hero is someone you look up to, someone who has done something to inspire you, someone who is your role model. In our society, there are many different types of heroes—family, friends, teachers, firefighters, and police officers to name a few. But a hero that stands out to me is a U.S. soldier. Soldiers risk their lives every day just so we can have our freedom.

“Hero,” what does this mean today? People have many different ways of using this word. The Webster Dictionary definition states, “a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability.” I look at the word “Hero” and think bravery, courage, and sacrifice. First, when you see or hear of the growing problem of bullies in the school system, you see a hero stand up now and again. I have seen this with my daughter, who once was bullied, but stood up for herself and for others. As a father, this made me feel proud that you’re raising a leader and not a follower. Secondly, the men and women that not only put their life on the line for our country once, but go back a second time or more. This is courage, not only for the soldiers themselves, but their families. I have many family and friends that have served or still serve in our military. The courage they face overseas is hard, but for most, the courage comes when they return home. Lastly, anyone that puts someone else or someone’s life in front of their own takes sacrifice. Our local, county, and state law enforcement do this every day. We see it on the news, or know someone that has witnessed this. For many they have lived the reality of the sacrifice of a loved one. So when I define the word “Hero,” I say look around, life is full of hero’s, it’s in use all.
You also don’t have to kill anyone, conquer foreign land, or risk your life to be a hero. Anyone who influences anyone else by saving or helping save his or her lives is a hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the lives of millions of people by bringing justice to minorities. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest heroes, led a nonviolent revolution to free his country.
...America and Franz Stigler of Germany show that it does not matter if you are fighting for different countries but to fight with a code of honor and respect. Stigler showed signs of respect and humanity when he spared Charlie Brown and his crews life on December 20th, 1943.
