The theme of the book as it relates to the American Dream is those who take advantage by becoming covetous and acquisitive. The Clutters in this book are described as the ideal American Dream family. Herb Clutter is the head man of the house who makes sure that his family and financial situations are in order. Herb started off with a struggle but eventually worked hard to become the man he became. Even though they were viewed as a rich family toward the community they did have underlying issues that weren’t visible to the outside world. Dick and Perry on the other hand are those who were unable to achieve the American Dream so they were willing to do anything to become successful the easy way even if that means stealing from others. They

“Al Condraj sat on the bench he had made and smelled the parsley garden and didn’t feel humiliated anymore. But nothing could stop him from hating the two men, even though he knew they hadn’t done anything they shouldn’t have done.” (The Parsley Garden, Junior Great Books, Series 6, pg.42)
Anyone who knows me knows I love gardening. I love growing my own vegetable and herbs. I love the look, feel and smell of natural food. However, I have two really big problems: 1) I am not always sure what to do with all the herbs I have managed to grow over the years and 2) I live in Maryland and can only grow herbs and vegetables a few months a year. Needless to say, when Christie approached me about reviewing the Natural Herbal Living Magazine and Herb Box, I jumped at the chance. The Natural Herbal Living Magazine and Herb Box solve both of my problems. They have a subscription plan that allows you to learn about each herb not only on an intellectual level, but on a physical one as well.

It doesn’t require much hard work and it is much less labour-intensive than traditional farming and gardening. Aquaponics is an ideal approach to farming for those advanced in age and those with limited mobility. There comes a time at a young age, where everyone has done mistakes and some learn from it and some don’t. In the short story The Parsley Garden, by William Saroyan suggests that working hard for what you want gives you more respect rather than stealing. He shows this by chronicling the life of Al Condraj, demonstrating that him and his mom were impecunious living in fresno but Al Condraj decides to make up his mistakes and works hard for his hammer he wanted. Which he mentioned it wasn't something he needed that was important because his mom was giving him money to get the hammer instead of stealing. Al Condraj inspired himself to work for little things that are not important and not to steal and to also not get everything handed out easily.
Community gardens have been planted and maintained for many years and have been used to support war efforts, feed people during economic hardships, and boost a sense of community and pride. Community gardens are found all over the world from the U.S. to the U.K. and even in Afghanistan. Governments and citizens have started community gardens alike on public land and private land as well; for these reason they can really be anywhere as long as the community comes together to keep the garden healthy.
Growing food with Aquaponics is more efficient than growing food the traditional soil garden way. In a typical soil garden, growers end up spending hours of their time doing back breaking work on their garden, but not anymore, with Aquaponics the need for any tilling, digging, or weeding is eliminated. Aquaponics combines Aquaculture (Raising fish in tanks), and Hydroponics (Growing plants without soil). The outcome is a working system that provides plants with all the nutrients they need, while using a minimum of space, effort, water, fertilizers, and pesticides. Aquaponics allows farmers to use up to 90% less water than normal farming would use, so instead of watering your soil and having the majority of your water either lost by run off or evaporated by the sun, the water is recycled repeatedly through the system saving farmers hundreds of dollars on their monthly water bills. Also when growing with Aquaponics, much more food can be produced in a smaller space, in some cases growers have produced around twenty times the amount of produce in the same area a soil garden would. In addition, with the closed, controlled environment of the system, the need for the use of any pesticides a basically eliminated. Finally, Aquaponics enables growers to grow bigger, better and more quality produce.
Lavender a name derived from the latin work lavare (to wash) or livendula (livid or bluish) It is a perennial grown for its look and many other uses. People started cultivating lavender over 2500 years ago during the ancient times of Egypt and Rome around 600 B.C.. In the garden it will make a great accent for architecture and other flowers. It keeps deer and other irritating pests away. It is a resilient plant that needs full sun and plenty of drainage. The one thing that it isn’t resilient against is mold at its base. Instead of mulching it with wood It is best to use gravel or pea gravel. It should be in as much sunlight as possible. The best ground conditions would be a soil with plenty of sand or rocks and gravel. The best mixture is 1/3 soil and the rest with what will make good drainage. For the first year of its life It should receive water when it is dry to the touch. This will allow plenty of time for the roots to dig in and get well attached. Lavender Is best planted in the spring so it has a full summer to dig in and grow. But you can also plant it closer to late sprin...
At the University of West Florida we wanted to allow students, faculty, staff and community of Pensacola to help volunteer to maintain the garden and enjoy learning about the different food systems.(The Voyager.) The University of West Florida community garden was created in 2009 it gave the opportunity to students and staff that were interested in learning or teaching the right way to sustain food systems. (The Voyager.) As any community garden in order for it to thrive the school must have donations and volunteers. When talking about the mission of the University of West Florida garden the main one is to teach UWF faculty, staff, and others how to grow food locally and organically.(The Voyager.) To help students and encourage healthy eating by increasing access to fruits and vegetables to our campus. Helping us students develop leadership and increase respect and concern for the natural world. (The Voyager.)
Since aquaponics reuses the water in the framework, we can develop in dry seasons and regions with little water.
