“I am the master if my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” (Henley, 1875) The poem Invictus is worthy of studying because it tells how the author conquered his adversity. (Landquist) and how the poem inspires many people. (Shane) Also, the poem is based on a true story about the author’s illness and how his words in the poem describes how he overcame it. So here are some facts that support why I think the poem is worth studying.
The first fact about this poem is according to Diniejko, J. Andrzeij, the author William Ernest Henley was an editor, a critic, and a poet in 1849-1903. Also, his influence for literature was by a man named Thomas Edward Brown, who was a poet and an academic. When Henley was 12 years old he was diagnosed with tuberculosis of the bone. The doctors had to amputate his one leg because it was effected. Although, usually since one leg had to be amputated, the other one had to also, but a doctor used

a new “antiseptic medicine” on Henley that the other leg didn’t need to be amputated. So while he was living in adversity in the hospital, he wrote poetry that imitated his days of pain. The second fact that reasons why the poem is worth studying is because the poem inspires a very important man named Nelson Mandela. Mandela was in prison for 27 years due to his belief of race. Henley’s poem inspired Mandela and his life. (Lindquist) One of the reasons behind the poem how it inspires others is it has bravery with the fear of death and shows the grace that God gave him, which is the same for many people. Also the poem inspires people because it tells them to stand up for themselves during times of war and accept the responsibility of life’s challenges. (Master) The last reason why the poem Invictus inspires many people is because it has biblical references that pertain to those who follow Christian faith. (Invictus) The poem by William Ernest Henley is a remarkably memorable piece that is written in a way someone’s mind may run. Henley was a good smart poet who had great strength through life’s battles. This poem is very important to memorize and to learn because it tells a person that they are not the only one going through suffering, but many. The first aspect of language, which he uses is metaphor in the beginning of the poem when he is describing the dwarf sitting outside the church. He uses metaphor as he says, “The dwarf with his hands on backwards Sat, slumped like a half – filled sack On tiny twisted legs from which Sawdust might run.” The metaphor here of the dwarf sitting like a ‘half filled sack’ is describing the dwarf and how he has a deformed body. He is being compared to looking like a sack, which is slumped and half empty. This is effective as it seems as though the dwarf cannot help himself
The poem told the story of a man who is inhibited by language, and has never quite had the ability to articulate his thoughts and feeling through words. It is said that his family members have tried
This Book was pretty much an easy read for me. His poems are not very long and cut to the chase. While reading them I noticed there was always something exciting that caught my attention to keep me reading on. In the first couple pages of “For the Confederate Dead”, the poems names are very organic. This is one of the reasons I was drawn into this book. With names like Flame, Water, Ai...

This text appeals pathos because it talks about how great these men were, how they sacrificed their lives for humankind. It also talks about we have come so far in getting this close to achieving greatness. This text was meant to mourn the men who have passed away on this mission. And it did that so well.
The poems “Dulce et Decorum Est” and “Anthem for Doomed Youth” are written about war, death and society. Is it written by Owen, who has actually experienced being in the dreadful warzone. These poems express the truth and reality of what war really is and shows his belief in the ignorance of the people. The vocabulary and language used in each poem allows the reader to see the treacherous endeavours through Owen’s perspective. He gives us a clearer image. Both poems are set in the battlefield, during the period of WW1. Wilfred Owen fills the poem with deep personal emotions and it helps stimulate the reader’s feelings. He tells us what it’s really like living life in the trenches.
I think that William Blake is an important person because his poetry worked to help people find a way to express themselves about how they feel about war. His poetry also helped people see how the kings dominated the people. This world is different because William Blake lived because he made up two new movements like the “Romantic movement” and the “Pre-Romantic movement.” Knowing about William is helpful in my life because he taught me that determination and want will take you far. He also taught me that you don’t have to change the way you do things in order for people to like it as long as you like it yourself. In my point of view William was one of the best poets of his time with not that much recognition.
Henley establishes the sense of suffering that the speaker is experiencing through the use of multiple literary devices. By beginning the poem with images of darkness and despair, Henley sets the tone for
Contradicting the Classical Ideas of Heroism and Romanticism in Dulce et Decorum est, The Send Off, But I Was Looking At The Permanent Stars, The Deadbeat soldier, Counter Attack, Metal Cases and other War Poems by Wilfred Owen
As an example, the author warns us that in a certain section of the poem, war can be horrific, "His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin". Moreover this line of the poem points out difficulties that the men face throughout battle. Equally important, in "Dulce et Decorum Est" it states that, "Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots, but limped on, blood-shed". Although some may think it's important to fight for your country Wilfred Owen, the author of this poem, believes that men should not be forced to fight for their country. On the contrary, in the poem titled "Who's for the Game" by Jessie Pope he has a positive perspective on war and what it consists
This poem is not only a prayer to God to heal her unhealthy body, but it is thanking God for helping her in the past. In lines twenty-one and twenty-two, Anne writes, “Thou heard’st, Thy rod Thou didst remove And spared my body frail” (Bradstreet 277), These two lines, among other Anne Bradstreet poems, tells me that Anne was not a selfish women, she knew that she must thank God for what he has done for her in order for him to help her again. Anne was a very considerate person she was always looking out for others, mainly her children and husband. Toward the end this poem Anne Bradstreet is giving glory to God. She is thanking him for not only curing her illness at that time, but also thanking him for helping her with everything else that goes on in her life.
“Dulce et Decorum Est,” by Wilfred Owen, had a tone that was very angry and defiant to the war. The soldiers are very upset by the fact that the world thinks the war is all about glory and often romanticize about it. But, for instance, “As under a green sea, I saw him drowning,” where is the glory in that? There is nothing heroic about drowning; it is a terrible and gruesome death. The whole attitude of this poem was based on the lie about the war being sweet, when in reality is horrific and awful for all people involved. On the other hand, the poem “The Soldier,” written by Rupert Brooke, had a tone that was more about peace and compassion to the war because of the man it made the character. Moreover, the soldier wants the reader to remember
Though his poetry had different stark reactions, it was still highly acclaimed and recognizable by many. His protest of the War led many others to follow in his footsteps. His extremely popular poetry was read by people all over the world, and especially by people involved in the war. Sassoon was well known for his harsh, extreme, and vivid recreations of the war through his works. He combines imagery, tone, mood, and his very own experiences of the war into a very clearly opinionated poem. Siegfried criticised and harped the war and all the people involved in it. He did what others are afraid to do and he took a stand. This poet should be studied and read in every household because it proves how your words can and will affect a change. He use his work as much more than entertainment. He stood up against the norms of society and stood for what was right. He rallies his audience through his works, and calls them to stand up themselves to those who are doing wrong. Siegfried Sassoon called out the mockery of Catholicism in the first World War, and he protested the wrongdoings that it
In the poems, “In flanders field” by John McCrae, “Concord hymn” by Ralph Waldo Emerson and “Dulce et Decorum est” by Wilfred Owen, a common theme is showed. This theme in the three poems is the theme of remembrance. In “In Flanders Field” it is important that the reader remembers the sacrifices that were taken by the soldiers during WWI. In “Concord Hymn” it is important that we remember the soldiers in the revolutionary war that earned our freedom. In “Dulce et Decorum est” it is important that the reader remembers the horror that these soldiers had to go through in World War I. One may look at these poems and come to the conclusion that the theme is war and what it's about, but the theme really is remembering different aspects of war. In all three of these poems we see remembrance as a very important because
This poem, when not reading it searching for a deeper meaning, is about a gladiator who is dying. There are also seemingly-random lines places throughout the poem. When searching for the actual meaning, you realize these random lines aren't so random. These lines are key to finding the deeper meaning about a soldier. This soldier is the “main character” in this poem. The soldier, assumingly got shot, and in his final moments, looks up to a gladiator and remember how gladiators stay strong and brave before they die. He talks about how gladiators have a thousand thoughts running through their minds but they still will be brave. Kevin Prufer mae this poem only one stanza, which is confusing to me. I think that Kevin Prufer should have made different stanzas when he refers back to real life. This would help the reader out when trying to decide whether Kevin is talking about the soldier or the gladiator. I think that this title is a good one, but only if Kevin wanted the reader to really search for the hidden meaning. If he was trying to give it up, he should have named this poem “The Soldier”. The theme or tone of this poem seems to be remembrance. When researching a little bit into Kevin Prufer’s life, you realize that this poem fits in very nicely with the rest of the books he writes. He seems to enjoy writing about America. He has written books “In a Beautiful Country” and “National Anthem:
