For this essay I have chosen to argue the case against the sociocultural concept of Hegemony with reference to key thinkers in this field including Antonia Gramsci and Stuart Hall, using examples from Contemporary Western society and cultures. I would like to begin my essay by simply defining the term Hegemony. “Hegemony is the social, cultural, ideological, and economic influence used by a dominant group over another group in society.”(Encyclopaedia Britannica 2014) “It is applied cautiously rather than forcefully through cultural means and economic power.”(New York Times 2009) Hegemony for me is essentially the term used when powerful people use their influence to convince others in society to do what is in the more powerful people’s best interests. It depends upon the successful use of cultural and social institutions such as the media to shape the limits of economic and political freedom for citizens. In this essay I will outline and discuss how hegemony carries this out and with what effects. I will look specifically at the role hegemony plays in both the media and in politics.
In today's world, hegemony is often used to refer to a group in society having power over others within that society. In this instance “Hegemony can be represented as a power system.”(Christensen 2014) Every day practices show how governments rule and have complete power over our societies. The act of paying taxes is an example of everyday hegemony. However, “in fair systems no group systematically evades the burden of responsibility of taxation”. In conclusion, hegemony has both its advantages and disadvantages in society. In terms of politics, for the wealthy it is a means to achieve more capital for the conservative classes. For the less privileged classes, their economic wellbeing remains static, relying on social benefits and poorer opportunities to further their wellbeing. Despite the system of free education, the lower classes of society have not gained materially because the cost of third level education is unattainable due to their lower income. In relation to media, Hegemony can easily shape the opinions and views of the public and influence their perception on certain issues. It is because of this I am against the idea of hegemony. We as citizens must be conscious of the presence of hegemony in our society and the way in which it is used to sway our thinking on certain issues.
Domination politics is based on the belief of meritocracy. Meritocracy is the belief that a culture already provides the?dream yet to come true (pg. 11). Everyone in this politic is thought to have equal access to success or failure in their own society and therefore, a belief of superiority emerges among the rich, white, Christian, heterosexual, and able-bodied men. Domination politics survives so strongly because it thrives on economic injustice, oppression and moral insolvency.

In “Biographies of Hegemony” by Karen Ho, she emphasizes that it is “only through the small and the everyday that we can understand the criteria of hegemony in all its particularity and contextuality” (168). To fully understand and evaluate someone or a group, people must look at the small and everyday stories each person possesses. Smallness can be defined as certain experiences and individual qualities that are overlooked by big corporations such as Wall Street. By reviewing the small stories and individual experiences, people can begin to unravel and fully understand hegemony and how it came to be. Gramsci conceived of hegemony when he was imprisoned by Mussolini’s Fascist regime. He was interested in understanding how a state could remain in power and maintain its control even when so many people were oppressed by it. Gramsci developed his concept of hegemony to understand how forces of power can lead people in the lower class to maintain the status quo rather than rebel against it even in the face of oppression. He maintained that control does not always happen through violence or political and economic coercion but also through ideology. He states that hegemony is the “political leadership...consent in the life and activities of the state and civil society” (Gramsci SPN Q10,I§12). In this sense, Hegemony is defined as, “the ‘spontaneous’ consent given by the great masses of the population to the general direction imposed on social life by the dominant fundamental group” (Lears 1985: 568).
Gramsci's most prominent inheritance to the discipline of cultural studies is the concept of hegemony - to refer to a condition in the process in which a dominant class (in alliance with other classes or class fractions) does not merely rule a society but leads it through the exercise of ‘intellectual and moral leadership' (Storey, 2009:79). Its prevalence roots itself in mass consensus, suggesting a stable society operating within a concord, albeit the overhead oppression and exploitation. With the entirety of the following argument resting upon which ‘hegemony' is defined, it is worth noting that Gramsci's contextualization of the term has two facets in itself. Wright Mills in his article “ The Structure of Power in American Society” writes that when considering the types of power that exist in modern society there are three main types which are authority, manipulation and coercion. Coercion can be seen as the “last resort” of enforcing power. On the other hand, authority is power that is derived from voluntary action and manipulation is power that is derived unbeknownst to the people who are under that power.
It has long been said that, “If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck”. This so-called “duck test” implies that one can identify a subject by observing its characteristics. By this standard assessment, we can then ask, is the United States an empire? The answer, according to the duck test, is a rather definitive yes. However, a nation is more complex than a mere duck and therefore, I believe that there is merit in the argument that slapping this label on the United States can at times be inappropriate and distracting. For this reason, I lean more toward the argument that the United States is in fact, not an empire, but rather a hegemony that is too often mislabeled. In order to fully critique and analyze these opposing arguments, I will define the term “empire” then identify, compare, and contrast the assertions of each position.
Having understood that the world has taken the form it has through the domination or imperialism of Western countries, it is said that they are the agents that have greatly influenced the world; their ideologies in addition to their political as well as economic influences have spread across the globe through time (Headrick, 1981).
In Harry Potter in International Relations, Nexon and Neumann argue that “popular culture is a crucial domain in which social and political life are represented” but that “such representations are not merely passive mirrors; they also play a crucial role in constituting the social and political world.” Durkheim explains that social life is created through human agency, consisting of entities that, as Durkheim asserts, exist “as realities external to the individual” and “as a product of human agency.” The production of these facts is not founded by individual opinion but through collective understanding, manifested in popular culture. Popular culture artifacts, then, assume the agency of the individual in predetermining the interpretation to be accepted.

Power may take various forms, all of which are employed and exercised by individualsand unto individuals in the institutions of society. In all institutions, there is political and judicial power, as certain individuals claim the right to give orders, establish rules, and so forth as well as the right to punish and award. For example, in school, the professor not only teaches, but also dictates, evaluates, as well as punishes and rewards.

Rulings made in meetings of significant corporations and banks can influence the rates of inflation and unemployment.
Moreover, Fairclough has highlighted the fact that language is highly manipulative in nature as it is used as an agent of hegemony. By hegemony, the sub-ordinate class is made to think that the dominant group has all the rights to rule over them and to deal them as per their choice and interests. Politics is the means for attaining valued things. Although, valued things are different in every society, the means of securing those things has never changed. The competition for power, authority and influence will always be the backbone of politics. Applying power, authority and influence to the valued things that support the public good, will produce the quality of life a society desires. In the present day, citizens in the United States demand certain valued things such as welfare, education, safe streets and healthcare. Through politics, citizens can apply their power in many different ways to get the things they want. Power is the ability to get someone to do something they may or may not want to do.
