Fish can feel feelings of depression just like humans can. A study in Heather Murphy’s f article from NYT shows the test scientist have taken (Novel Tank Test) to show the emotions of fish. Test taken by Dr.Pittman reveals, “A zebrafish gets dropped in a new tank. If after five minutes it is hanging out in the lower half, it’s depressed. If it’s swimming up top — its usual inclination when exploring a new environment — then it’s not.” Dr.Pittman reveals that fish show their emotions just a obvious as humans, due to the type of environment they are in. Fish are social creatures just like humans if they are alone in an empty space it can make us become extremely lonely which leads to depression. Some people may say that fish don’t have the intelligence …show more content…
to be conscious of one's owns feelings and surroundings. Though fish don’t have the same atomic structure as humans, we aren't completely non alike from each other as we all like to think. In scientist Macrina Cooper-White it states, “Fish can become “depressed-like” when experiencing chronic stress. Researchers took two kinds of zebrafish — one normal, and one with a mutant gene — and isolated them in an unfamiliar environment. While the normal fish was able to adjust after a few minutes, the mutant fish sat still at the bottom of the tank and took much longer to return to normal. This proves that fish like us have a nervous system and can comprehend the pain and emotions we feel in order to develop feelings like depression. It’s not fair to neglect other animals just because they don't act like one popular particular species that most humans associate with emotionally.
According to Animal Ethics, “A minority of people don’t have any concern for the way animals are treated and are not concerned even when animals are tortured pointlessly. A less extreme version of this view is shown by people who are opposed to torturing animals in some unusual ways or merely for the fun of it, yet don’t think it matters very much that animals suffer because of the way humans treat them as long as humans benefit from it.” This proves that humans shouldn’t neglect one species of animals just because it benefits them. Which there justifies why there should more action taken to give all animals better treatment instead of just one animal species. Some humans don’t believe they do this type of discrimination towards animals. Although not all people do this they may imply it in their actions like, for example with fish. A quote from Animal Ethics states, “For example, one can reject the use of dogs and cats for food (an acceptable practice in some countries) but accept the consumption of, say, chickens and fishes. This is also a form of speciesist discrimination, since all sentient animals have an interest in not being harmed regardless of the species to which they belong.” In the end though you may give more respect to all mammals more action should be taken to respect to all animals no matter if we use them as a resource for food or
not.
The men of the 714th Tank Battalion served their country in its greatest time of need. A key element of the 12th Armored Division, the 714th fought in harsh conditions against a desperate German enemy for five consecutive months, driving the Nazi Armies from France and back into the German heartland.
Effect on others: Throughout the first three quarters of the story, three different illustrations portray the fish scowling at the cat (11, 25, and 37) immediately after each of the cat’s activities. When the cat returns to clean up his mess at the end of the story the fish is shown with a smile on his face (57). Explaining the scowls on the fish’s face support the argument that the cat’s behavior at the beginning of the story is not acceptable to the fish. The fish’s smile at the end of the story reveals that the cat is engaging in behavior that is now acceptance to the
The short story explains the sustainability of life, how a negativity of a relationship can help one relate to the smallest symbolic things. The lesson of sustainability of life is more than just the life of the Fish. It was more upon the relationship between the parents. The owner of the fish was small and would not care for the fish, making the mother take care of it Reminiscing of her childhood fish; the mother also remembers how her father dumped her childhood fish in a Michigan river. The mother of the little boy still kept her act together even after the infidelity of her husband. She would compare it to her parent’s relationship. In a way, the negativity of both relationships made her compare her life to the fish in the tank. The mother “… felt awe at the fact that life was sustainable even under the most abhorrent conditions.” She felt that the fish was most likely going through the same stuff she was going through with her husband. After seeing Fish’s tank dirty, the little boy told his mother and assumed the fish was dead, little did he know the fish was not dead and that mother had cleaned the tank and moved it to the living room after signing the last papers of her divorce and saying farewell to her ex husband. At the end they all carried the fish “… where with a soft patter of congratulatory applause they’ll present Fish with a new home, right next to the television set.” She in a way explained Fish’s new life in a positive way ad for her life shall be the same. Overall the story compares to the human’s life and a fish’s life both very different, but in a way more similar than one can imagine. The topic of adultery is harsh, and the way individuals take it can either be calm or crazy. In my opinion she took her divorce calm and made her have a certain type of love back into her life. It is bazar to think that a fish’s situation gave the
Despite the resources, awareness and training embarked upon to identify and reduce depression among sailors, and families, depression can barely be reduced and even when sailors know they are depressed, they refuse to seek treatment to avoid being labeled as weak.
The poet seems to share the same pain with the fish, observing the scene and enjoying the detail just like enjoying an artwork. The poet lets the fish go because she is totally touched by the process between life and death; she loves life but, meanwhile, is deeply hurt by the life. In the poem, the fish has no fear towards her; the desire to live is in the moving and tragic details when she faces the death.
Hurting an animal is better than hurting a fellow human being right? Well imagine a child being ripped away from his mother in today’s society, for no reason. Would that be considered okay, or kidnapping? Imagine humans being forced to breed, just so their children can be tortured for makeup or a new facial wash. Would that be considered okay, or morally incorrect? People do not see animals as fellow living things, because they do not have the power to say no like a person can. They can’t stand up for themselves, leaving the people of the world to do it for them. Seeing that there are other ways to test out consumer products, why harm defenseless, breathing, loving, beings? With all things considered, animal testing “has no place in science today” (Goodall, 1).
Many countries around the world agree on two basic rights, the right to liberty and the right to ones own life. Outside of these most basic human and civil rights, what do we deserve, and do these rights apply to animals as well? Human rights worldwide need to be increased and an effort made to improve lives. We must also acknowledge that “just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures” (Dalai Lama). Animals are just as capable of suffering as we are, and an effort should be made to increase their rights. Governments around the world should establish special rights that ensure the advancement and end of suffering of all sentient creatures, both human and non-human. Everyone and everything should be given the same chance to flourish and live.
Depression is defined as "a state of despondency marked by feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness" (Coon, 2001). Some people can mix up depression with just having the blues because of a couple of bad days or even weeks. It is already said that depression affects about one sixth of the population or more (Doris, Ebmeier, Shajahan, 1999). Depression can happen in any age range from birth to death. The cause of depression is still obscure and becoming clear that a number of diverse factors are likely to be implicated, both genetic and environmental. Some causes are leading stressful lives, genetic factors, a previous depressive episode, and the personality trait neuroticism (Doris, et al., 1999).
The debate of whether animal rights are more important than human rights is one that people have argued mercilessly. Some people think all animals are equal. To understand this, humans must be considered animals. Humans are far more civilized than any animal, they have the power, along with understanding to control many types of sickness and disease. This understanding that humans have, keeps them at the top of the food chain.
The abuse that animals endure at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating. Animals are just as delicate as humans, so why not abuse us too? Animal lives should be just important as ours. No animals should be killed or abused for testing, entertaining, clothing, or hoarding. Every year, millions of animals are being killed and torture for testing.
Maintaining an aquarium is a difficult task because of all the various sciences involved in keeping an aquarium safe for both plants and aquatic creatures to live in. An aquarium will fail without the proper balances between chemicals, fish, and plants. To find the balances between chemicals and bacteria, a lot of research and hard work is needed.
These are tanks constructed with blocks, either hollow or solid. Hollow blocks when used are usually filled with mortar to further reinforce it. Different sizes of blocks are used for tank construction; this could be 4” or 5” solid blocks, and 6” hollow blocks. Concrete tanks can take any shape, i.e rectangular, square and circular; hexagon, triangular, etc. To further reinforce the tank, 12mm rods can be installed at the four corners of the tank. Where two or three tanks are joined together, it is also advised that they are chained together to prevent them from collapsing as a result of the strength of static water body. For tanks that are not square or rectangular, the critical points are also reinforced with rods. The sizes also depend on the space available for use. Concrete tanks are easy to construct, strong, durable and easy to manage. The average depth for this tank is 1.2m and the water management system could be static renewal, flow through or re-circulatory. The yield here is also high.
Being human indicates the feeling of pain, pleasure, fear, and love; if animals can display these emotions, are they not human? The unethical treatment of animals is largely due to the fact that we as humans do not believe animals are sentient (capable of feeling pain or pleasure). Would it not be feeling pleasure when a kitten purrs when being stroked? How about when you beat a dog and they howl out; is that not pain?
One of the most unique creatures are fish. As I am sitting here in my room, my fish are swimming about with not a care in the world. I wonder what it would feel like to be a fish.
Throughout the history of the world, there have been subjects of heated debates; there are a few facts that are undisputed. One of the undisputed facts is that animals existed and inhabited the planet before humans did and humans have been dependent on animals for thousands of years. Animals have played a very vital part in our history and one wonders whys should they be treated with much cruelty. While animals have been a great resource, a steady supply of food and clothing and even security, our treatment towards them has become nothing short of appalling. Since humans are dependent on animals for their well being, their comfort and at times their religion, there should be a moral obligation to treat animals.
