Science in the Aquarium Maintaining an aquarium is a difficult task because of all the various sciences involved in keeping an aquarium safe for both plants and aquatic creatures to live in. An aquarium will fail without the proper balances between chemicals, fish, and plants. To find the balances between chemicals and bacteria, a lot of research and hard work is needed.
Background
The earliest known aquariums were cared for by the Sumerians. The Sumerians kept fish inside artificial ponds over 4500 years ago. The earliest known breeding of fish was in China around 1000 BC. The ancient Romans also contribute to the history of aquariums by creating ponds which were fed seawater directly from the ocean. The Romans also were the first people

This was an issue because the metal corroded quickly. To fix this issue, Martin Horowitz developed a tar and silicone sealant and created the first aquarium made completely of glass. Now, the metal frames are only used for aesthetic purposes.
Science
An aquarium is filled with many different types of sciences. These include chemistry, biology, anatomy, psychology, and ecology. Without a proper balance between each of these, an aquarium will most likely fail. This is why researching how to properly set up an aquarium is a very important step in the process of starting a new aquarium.
Psychology
The psychology between the different fish in an aquarium is a very big part in keeping the fish alive and well. Not all fish are able to live in harmony with other fish. When some fish, such as a betta, are placed with another fish, the betta will become very aggressive toward the other fish and attack it by biting its fins. This is obviously not a healthy aquarium. When choosing fish for an aquarium, it is easiest to choose fish which are safe to live in a community with other types of fish. Another psychological factor related to fish concerns the aquarium size. Not all fish are happy when living inside a small five gallon aquarium. Some fish need larger aquariums in order to grow and live happier lives. Without a larger tank, some fish will become depressed, their growth may be stunted, and they may not live as long as they would have lived in a larger tank that is better suited for their
A perfect size would be a large glass terrarium 18” by 36” by 18”. That terrarium costs around $235 dollars new. Whatever you want to decorate the tank with, such as the floor, walls, and hiding spots, will probably cost around fifty dollars if you buy the decorations at a pet store.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Cephalopods are known to be exceptionally intelligent by invertebrate standards and in some respects even rival “higher” vertebrates. These animals have many highly evolved sensory and processing organs that allow them to gain a greater understanding of their environment and their place within it. Due to their advanced structures, many of which are analogous to vertebrate structures, and abilities they have been widely studied. Their methods of learning have been of prime interest and many experiments have been conducted to determine the different ways in which octopuses can learn. From these experiments four main kinds of learning have been identified in octopuses: associative learning, special learning,
The Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is an invasive saltwater predator that is increasing exponentially in the tropics of the western Atlantic (Benkwitt, 2013). The Lionfish invasion is causing a dramatic decline in native marine reef species due the gluttony of the lionfish.
Since water is the medium that the aquarium inhabitants must live in, it is the most vital component in any tank. The quality of the water used will directly effect how successful the aquarium is. The chemical balance of the water must be watched closely. If the salt content varies too much, or harmful chemicals build up, the water will kill the inhabitants of the tank.
An English naturalist Charles Darwin (1802-1882) developed a theory of biological evolution. He studied variation in plants and animals during his five years’ voyage around the world in the 19th century. Darwin studied hundreds of species, which he researches variations between locations. His theory states that all species of organism arise and develop through natural selection. Natural selection is the process of organisms that adapt to their surrounding environment, which tend to survive and produce more offspring. Killer whales are remarked to have evolutionary links from land dwelling organisms, millions of years ago. This paper will display the evolution and natural selection of the killer whale.
In The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister tells how a beautiful, extraordinary, yet, self-centered blue fish learns that being beautiful isn’t the key to happiness. The blue fish came to find this lesson when he lost his friends. Pfister takes a simple ocean setting and explores the consequences of an individual’s arrogance toward their peers, the process of humbling of oneself, and the tremendous reward one feels when they learn to share. The story achieves these morals by the author’s use of detailed imager and also, the influence of minor characters on the antihero in order to reveal to the audience the true thematic message; selfish actions bring true happiness.
Did you know that the frog species were the first animals with vocal cords? Did you know that seahorses are actually fish not little serpents or mermaids as legend tells us, and that it is the male who becomes pregnant, not the female? Did you know that an area of a rainforest the size of a football field is being destroyed each second? If not, then you should definitively consider making a visit to the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Dramatic architecture and bright outdoor graphics invite you to investigate further this jewel of the city's vital Inner Harbor area. One of the world's largest and most sophisticated aquatic museums, the city's premier tourist attraction re-creates habitats from all over the world to house more than 15,000 sea creatures in over two million gallons of water. Its glass-and-steel pyramid shape is as unusual and stunning as the diverse sea creatures it houses. Most of the exhibits in the aquarium are part of a self-guided tour, so you can learn at your own pace. By using dramatic video, interactive displays and hi-tech graphics to assist you in your tour, the Aquarium not only introduces you to these special little creatures, but also inspires and intrigues you to want to learn even more. Whatever your interests, the National Aquarium provides a fun and educational visit for all!
There is no need for PhD. with this guide. Frank Tanner uses everyday terminology and makes all the steps easy enough to follow and understand when you begin to build your own Aquaponics garden.
A turtle’s habitat is vital for their health. Depending on the size and type of turtle you need to make sure you have an adequate home for it. If you decide to keep the turtle inside you need a large aquarium, no smaller than 20 gallons and if you have a baby turtle this will allow a little more room for growth so it will last you a bit longer than a smaller aquarium would. Filters are needed for this aquarium so you do not have to clean it out every day. A clean aquarium is very important for the turtle’s health.
Fish have more known species than any other vertebrate and their habitats range from the smallest freshwater streams to the deepest parts of the seafloor. They grow from a fraction of an inch to 50 feet and live anywhere from the arctic waters to the tropics. Fish skeletons can either be made of nothing but cartilage or nothing but bone. They can look very awkward or very majestic.
A clear contrast for dogs and fish are their habitat. This is probably the most notable contrast when considering having a dog or a fish as a pet. A fish has to live in an underwater habitat. This habitat can be as extreme as a wall to wall tank or as mundane as a small bowl on a desktop . Either way, this habitat causes the owner to incur extra expenses when purchasing a suitable tank, water, and
Fish make amazing pets, some reasons why they make great pets include that fish are known to have a “calming effect” on humans, fish are also way less expensive than other pets, fish also don't suffer separation anxiety like other pets do, they are also really quiet, actually fish are silent, fish are very unique.
The main biotic factors are the plants, fish, and microorganisms. The plants are the main component of an aquaponic system, and they play a significant role in forming a symbiotic ecosystem, the plants also provide water full of nutrients for the fish. Additionally, the fish play a role in forming the ecosystem, but they also assist in the growth of the of the plants by allowing for clean water to be produced from their waste. The bacteria allow for the nitrification cycle to take place, in turn, cleaning the water in the
There are many different elements and chemicals that can both positively and negatively affect freshwater ecosystems. Many different factors play into the survivability of a lake, pond, river, or other freshwater environment. If all of the different factors are not balanced correctly, the fish in that particular environment have a much lower chance at survival.
Introduction One particularly interesting sea creature is the whale shark, formally known as Rhincondon typus; it was first discovered in 1828 by Andrew Smith (Rowat 2012). This large fish is found globally in warm tropical oceans and prefers to stay within 200 meters of the ocean’s surface in waters ranging from 4.2 to 28.7 degrees Celsius (Stevens 2006). This creature can be found all across the globe in warm tropical seas. Aggregations of whale sharks have been seen off the coast of Australia at times, although it is primarily a creature of solitude. Whale sharks are filter feeders that consume plankton as well as small fish and are harmless to humans.
