In the novel, Heart Of Darkness Joseph Conrad depicts the racism that was evident in the early 1900s as he explores the theme good and evil. In Berdychiv, Ukraine on December 3rd 1857, Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski (Joseph Conrad) was born. Joseph Conrad did not have the education like any other child, after his parents had passed away from tuberculosis his education became erratic. He was being tutored by his literary father then attended school in Krakow. At age 16 he left Poland and traveled to marseilles. After going to Poland in 1890 Joseph Conrad began piloting a boat, which was the Nellie which was a social cruise. It is demonstrated in a good way because it changes the look on civilization towards many people and how they look at men. The theme civilization is not only American civilization but it is also European civilization, one of the main characters Marlow argues that when Europeans say civilization they are really only talking about fear of a law. But more than less the theme good and evil was shown throughout savagery as well. Looking back through Joseph Conrad’s book you catch on to realize that civilization and savagery are versing each other in shape or another just looking at how they go hand and hand. Through studies of conrad you will notice that they will point out various points on civilization, but then if you look further into the bigger picture you will realize that savagery is being brought out as well.
