Healthcheck Clinic Reflection

Before experiencing the Healthcheck Clinic, I was apprehensive about being a participant. This was due to my lack of confidence in implementing the health exams, such as with testing blood pressure. During the training day, I was not assured in my determined values for blood pressure, even though I practiced twice. This inability to ascertain the values continued in the Healthcheck Recap, as well. However, I was able to improve my skills in the Human Patient Simulation activity. During the activity, I was able to get blood pressures that were close to the values entered beforehand for the patient. This instilled in me more self-assurance before attending the clinic. Additionally, before going to the clinic, I thought that its program reflected the compassionate care that healthcare professionals should uphold. This was due to the services that we learned and how each step had a component of consideration. For instance, each exam and service started with the question, “Would you like this to be done?” This reflected care towards a patient’s opinion. I did the steps that I was taught to do, and the patients that I had were very open to having the exams. The welcoming that my patients gave me enabled me to become more confident in my skills, and I was then able to give them the quality care they deserved. For instance, there was a moment where I could not find their pulse on my own. They then continued to joke about how they are a “vampire.” The humor that they showed me allowed me to calm down, and I was able to find their pulse. I believe that they were trying to dissipate my nervousness from not being able to perform the task. Therefore, I still believe that the experience was humbling and I am glad that I was able to provide even a little bit of care to such kind
