The Career Psychiatrist
Why would anyone in this world want to become a psychiatrist? To me I think
that mental illnesses are important to this world. That's because millions of Americans
are affected by mental disorders daily. Psychiatry seems like an interesting career. Many
people in this world will say that they don't want to work with a mental patient, because
they are afraid that the mental patient might try to harm them. It would be interesting to
find out why many people are suffering from mental disorders.
Psychiatry deals with mental disorders.Mental disorders may affect most aspects
of a patient's life, including physical functioning, behavior, emotions, thought,
perception, interpersonal relationships, sexuality, work, and play. Disorders are often
seen as exaggerations of situations that healthy individuals experience. Examples of these
disorders are: depression, frighten, envious, or angry. These examples can only be seen as
mental disorders if they are continuous, excessive, and lead to self-destructive behavior.
Mental disorders seriously affect a person's ability to function and lead a happy
life. Psychiatry is one of the frontier areas of medicine. Also, psychiatry is one of the
oldest specialties. Psychiatry is the medical specialty that is concerned with the
treatment, prevention of mental disorders, and the diagnosis. A psychiatrist is basically a
physician that treats mental illnesses.
Psychiatrist's spend more than 48 hours a week at work. 60 percent of those 48
hours (28.8 hours) is spent with patients. Psychiatrist lead patients into a discussion about
the patient's life and feelings to get an understanding of what the patient goes through on
a daily basis. Psychiatrist use psychoanalysis as treatment for patients. Psychoanalysis is
specific method of investigating unconscious mental processes. Approximately 2.8
percent of the adult population suffer from severe mental illnesses.
The starting salary for being a psychiatrist is $95,500 and goes to $305,000.
Psychiatrist earn 0 percent to 30 percent bonuses. This information on salaries is for most
psychiatrist around the United States.
The required education for being a psychiatrist is basically like other medical
fields. The reason for that is because with most medical fields you have to do residency.
The treatments at the hospitals that specialized in curing the insane were often done for the benefit of the staff, not the pat...
As medical advances are being made, it makes the treating of diseases easier and easier. Mental hospitals have changed the way the treat a patient’s illness considerably compared to the hospital described in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Movies and shows like, “Girl Interrupted” and “American Horror Story: Insane Asylum” portray hospitals in a way that has truth to it, however they portray the people in a negative way. It has become more known to society that the hospitals that the mentally ill are subjected to living in are not a good place to be. However, the stigma that mentally ill people are dangerous and cannot overcome their illness is still widely
As time goes on, the law has put more emphasis on facility just like Bridgewater State Hospital in which many of the actions of the facility workers can face legal consequences such as facing prison time, fines, lawsuits, and etc. Society has a better understanding of why certain people act the way that they do and being more knowledgeable about psychology and mental diseases allows us to have a different approach when dealing with these topics or these individuals. In today’s era, there are many normal individuals who are willing to stand up for those who do not have a voice of their own. I believe that this change in one’s ability to stand up for another individual or group of individuals is what brought about change to the medical environment of those who are mentally
“To study the abnormal is the best way to study the normal” (William James). Psychiatrists never give up on any of their patients and always help anyone who asks for it. Psychiatrists have a never ending work schedule. Sometimes their patients call them even without an appointment because they are really struggling and they have to go talk to them. Psychiatrists also have to get at least eight years of school and an additional three or more years of an internship (“Career Information Center” 142- 43) . Psychiatrist must also have good communication skills. If they do not then their patient will feel like they do not care about them and they are not listening and the psychiatrists will be putting even more pain and pressure on them (Social Skills Training) . Even though psychiatrists must go through many years of school and training, all of their hard work is pays off knowing that they help people every day.
We all have our own perception of psychiatric hospitals. Some people may see them as a terrifying experience, and others may see them as a way to help people who cannot keep their disorders under control. David Rosenhan's perception led him to a variety of questions. How could psychiatric hospitals know if a patient was insane or not? What is like to be a patient there? According to Rosenhans study, psychiatric hospitals have no way of truly knowing what patients are insane or not; they quickly jump to labeling and depersonalizing their patients instead of spending time with them to observe their personality.
In ancient times, a superstition was once believed by humans that erratic behavior was the possession of spiritually evil demons, that only wizardry or sorcery could mend and cure the mentally ill. In 1808, a man named Professor Johann Christian Reil developed a new medicine field called Psychiatry, meaning the soul or mind. Eventually, the physicians practicing this medical field were known as Psychiatrist (“History of Psychiatry”). As time passed, the field started to evolve and the knowledge expanded becoming one of the oldest medical fields still existing today (“Psychiatrist – DO/MD”). Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are experts at preventing and treating psychological illnesses such as mental disorders. A Psychiatrist is a significant aspect to the medical field because they gain insight into the human mind, specialize in varieties of mental disorders, and help humans overcome internal problems.
In today’s society, the stigma around mental health has caused many people to fear seeking medical treatment for problems they are dealing with. With an abundance of hateful outlooks and stereotypical labels such as: crazy, psycho, and dangerous, it is clear that people with a mental illness have a genuine reason to avoid pursuing medical treatments. Along with mental health stigma, psychiatric facilities that patients with a mental health issue attend in order to receive treatment obtain an excessive amount of unfavorable stereotypes.

I watched 60 Minutes: Depression and inner-city psychiatry. This video was actually very interesting and I learned a lot. I learned that while 15 percent of the population is clinically depressed those that are poor are 2 or 3 times more likely to be depressed. I didn’t realize that welfare offices and health care centers were capable of providing depression screenings. I knew there was a stigma on psychiatry and their patients, but I learned that certain groups of people put specific stigmas on psychiatrists. For example, the church of scientology’s anti-psychiatric beliefs. Dr. Carl Bell is a very inspiring psychiatrist in this video. He focuses on helping people that are less fortunate, understanding their issues, and solving the problems
In the real world deciding on what you want to do for the rest of your life can be scary and most certainly confusing. There are over thousands of different careers and lifestyles that could suit you. How do you know if you have chosen the right one? The idea of patients with mental disorders being kept in institutions did not become popular until the 17th century (“Psychiatric Nurses” Volume 5 150). A career such as Psychiatric Nurse Partitioning has its pros and cons, but the journey to becoming one is something that will miraculously change your life.
My personal view on mental illness, is an illness that needs care, compassionate, affection, empathy, sympathy and to acknowledge that mental illness exists. As a Psychologist I will bring to the field a wide range of skills such as being very open-minded, diverse, and culturally competent, accept and respect all religious beliefs, non-bias, non-judgmental and able to speak five different languages. I have chosen Mental Health Psychology because I want to make a positive difference and impact on the lives of the children and youth I work with. I support the biopsychosocial model and holistic approach when treating an individual with mental illness. Individuals should be treated as a ‘whole person and not pieces of the puzzle’ if we want to help them get better or be in control of their lives. The treatment becomes effective when addressing the biological, psychological and sociological aspects of the client are
Mental illness has been looked at as an undesirable thing and people with mental disabilities have been looked down on. Because of these attitudes, health professionals have taken more aggressive methods of treating these illnesses and ignored humanity (CHANGE WORD) in place of effectiveness; sometimes both of which were ignored in a vain attempt to change the patients. Technology and more knowledge have allowed health professionals to create less intrusive ways of treating the mentally disturbed. The changing attitude toward the mentally ill since the movement to deinstitutionalize them is illustrated in the housing opportunities, medical treatment, and psychological therapies.

The ethics of a forensic psychiatrist include confidentiality by keeping an individual's right to privacy to the highest degree, not being bias to follow the law completely and not let personal ideas interfere with their profession, and to have all the correct qualifications to ensure they are providing the most knowledgeable
