A health visitor are nurses and midwifes who promotes healthy lifestyles for kids, families and elderly people to prevent diseases and to help them regulate their health. Additionally, a health visitor should be able to advise patients on how to reduce risks and prevent accidents and reduce further injuries, to help patients be as careful as they can, so they are able to reduce danger and accidents. A health visitor, may have to tackle very sensitive subjects such as social inequality, health, conflicts between families. A health visitor is required to show maturity towards sensitive subjects to demonstrate professionalism. A health visitor should keep patients safe and should not discriminate or judge their patients. In addition, a health visitor might need to work closely with deprived groups of people, this includes being respectful and caring for people who may not be the same as them such as religion, class or education, this will enable the patient to get the best treatment possible while providing information on local services to help manage patients and to make them feel welcome to the environment. Health visitors may need to give information about hygiene to their patients to ensure they are safe and are preventing illness and diseases caused by bacteria and viruses which may harm vulnerable patients. For example patients with autoimmune disease will be very vulnerable to unhygienic and unsteralised places as their immune system attacks their normal cells as is can’t tell the difference bacteria and its own blood cells. Safety is a key part of the job, health visitors need to ensure how to keep safe in vulnerable places and how to keep patients safe, by learning what to so in dangerous situations such as an earthquake and knowing what are their responsibilities of the job. Through the utilisation of the accompanying text, I aim to discuss and reflect upon one person’s care, to which I have had previous involvement. Using the perspectives set out by Chapelhow et al (2005), I aim to gain a broader outlook on what is expected of me as a Student Nurse. Chapelhow et al (2005) has identified six skills that they feel are required of every Health Care Practitioner. These skills are defined as ‘enablers’ as they are fundamental skills that provide the means for expert professional practice (Chapelhow et al 2005). The role of nurses in the prevention of MRSA in the hospitals cannot be overemphasized. The prevalence of MRSA in hospitals calls for awareness and sensitization of all party involved in patient caregiving in the hospital. According to Wilkinson and Treas (2011), nurses take on many roles in the hospital: a caregiver, advocate, communicator, leader, manager counsellor, change agent and an educator. (Wilkinson &Treas. (2011) p.13.) The target of healthy people 2020 is to reduce MRSA and all other hospital acquired infection by 75% in the year 2020. (Healthy people 2020) This cannot be achieved without the maximum support of nurses because nurses have regular one on one contact with patients on daily basis.This paper will take a closer look at the role of a nurse as an educator in the prevention of MRSA in the hospital. Behaviors to Improve Patient Safety. There are five behaviors in which I, as a health care professional, can practice in order to improve safety for patients in my direct care. These include following written safety protocols, speak up when you have concerns, communicate clearly, don’t let yourself get careless, and take care of yourself. By adhering to simple, basic protocols such as hand washing you can be a key player in reducing the spread of infection to your patients and thus, keeping your patients safe.
