I am writing to you today to stress the increased need for resources and attention to be directed toward supporting and strengthening the healthcare workforce so that they can, in turn, support and care for their patients. Your assistance will enable the healthcare workforce to be equipped with the best medical professionals. This could be implemented with adequate support, breaks, and pay. Any investments made towards improving or strengthening the healthcare workforce will allow for programs and new models to be created in order to improve training, improve the skills of existing workers, and ensure population health needs are met. Healthcare workers are the backbone of society, and without them, the healthcare system simply cannot function. …show more content…
When hospitals are understaffed, healthcare workers experience time pressures and might not be able to give patients adequate care. The quality of attention needs to be greatly increased, which can be done by giving them as much flexibility and input into their work schedules as possible. In order to combat this issue, more focus should be put on nursing workforce development programs so nursing shortages can be dealt with appropriately and recruitment, retention, and advanced education for nurses and other health professionals can be supported adequately. As Director of Healthcare and Workforce Development, you have the power to not only encourage these changes, but implement them as well. Your background has given you a number of cases to study, but imagine, if you were living it firsthand, that you were in need of a doctor or nurse but unable to get the care you need because the hospital is understaffed. Or imagine getting a nurse who has just come off an all-nighter without a break. How are they supposed to give you the care you deserve when they are running on empty
Good afternoon! Our teams name is the Medicans, now I know that sounds like we only support one thing but we believe in all of our subjects equally. Today I will be talking about lowering the cost for prescription/medical cost, making school time later in the day, and changing taxes. The first subject I will be talking about it Prescription/Medical Cost. For citizens who have to pay for prescription/medical cost, it can become quite expensive. Insurance may cover the costs but when they don't and you truly need it fast what will you do? We believe in lowering prescription/medical costs. Now I know you might be thinking or maybe you’re not but this sounds an awful like Obama care, well since our new president was just elected Donald Trump,
J.G. and Mrs. D.J. with the following questions concerning the issues of staffing and nursing shortage. How long has the organization tried to address the issue of staffing and nursing shortage? “Nursing shortage has always been an issue for the Lexington Medical Center. I have been employed here for almost five years and there continues to be a struggle with staffing the unit. We have to utilize agency nurses to fill in the needs on the unit” (J. Gudvangen, personal communication, April 30, 2016). What measures have been taken to address the issue of staffing shortage? “There are incentives being offered to attract new employees to work at the facility. A sign on bonus is offered to the nursing staff for up to fifteen thousand dollars, depending on what area of nursing you specialize in. Also during the peak season when the census is really high in the hospital, a bonus incentive program is offered for medical staff in a twelve weeks span. If the employee works a certain amount of extra hours, in addition to their regular schedule, at the end of the twelve weeks a bonus is paid to the employee. The bonus can range from twenty-five hundred dollars to twelve thousand dollars. This is used a method to attract the staff to work extra hours during the busiest time of the season" (J. Gudvangen, personal communication, April 30, 2016). What future steps have been planned to address the issue of staffing shortage? “The hospital is
Many health care professionals are wondering why shortage transpired when managed care cost initiatives, implemented throughout the country, are dramatically decreasing the length of patient stays (Upenieks, 2003). In fact, such a situation should be resulting in a nursing oversupply. As the nursing shortage ensues, the need for recruiting and retaining highly skilled nurses committed to the organization will become necessary to maintain high-quality patient care. The recent national nurse shortage has resulted in higher nurse workloads; fewer support resources, greater nursing dissatisfaction, and burnout, making it more difficult to provide optimal patient care (Upenieks, 2003). The primary role of nursing is to provide the best possible care to patients.
Today I am going to be choosing diabetes for my medical topic. There are several types of diabetes. There is type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestastional diabetes. Our body naturally produce insulin and but sometimes there are cases where are body doesn’t produce enough insulin or does not properly respond to the insulin produced which results in high blood sugar levels. High blood sugar levels is not healthy for our bodies because it can lead to us going into a coma. If this is left untreated it can cause very serious health problems including death.
What is happening to our health care system? Things are not looking up for those in the nursing profession as the nursing shortage is expected to intensify. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Employment Projections, in 2022 there will be 1.05 million job openings Registered Nurses (RNs). Currently the turnover rates in hospitals are 8.9% to 34.3%, with a national turnover rate on average of 16.5%, a 1.8% increase from 2012 (Colosi, 2014).There are several factors that affect the shortage, such as: lacks of instructors to enable more people to enroll in nursing school, people are coming up for retirement, and an increase in turn over (Rosseter, 2014). Now is the time for leaders and managers in nursing to step up and not only recruit
These articles have many similarities when discussing the issue of staffing shortages. For patients, their loved ones and the general population, they don’t understand the ramifications and strain that staffing shortages have on nurses. People expect and deserve complete, competent and safe care when they are patients. These articles bring to light all the struggles that nurses have to deal with. Nurses are fearful that they will make mistakes, will harm patients, and will harm themselves. (Bae, 2012; Erlen, 2001; Martin, 2015) Overtime can be overwhelming and exhausting, which can lead to errors being made. (Bae, 2012; Erlen, 2001) These articles perceive that it may be beneficial for nurses, patients, and healthcare facilities to decrease the nurse-to-patient ratio, however, this option is not always
Last, The Magic of Chaos, that’s every as nurse. Around five am my phone rings, Good morning Ms. Bushnell, “I can’t work today”. That’s usually how my day begins eighty percent of the time. Those phone calls would not have been so bad, if I was working with a full deck of cards. My organization is not the only one with this dilemma of being short staffed, this has become the normal for healthcare. For nurses, this can have profound impact on day-to-day work causing burn out. As a leader, I had to accept the reality that being short staffed was not going to change and adapt accordingly. When leaders are innovative, empower others and promote shared decision, individuals are more likely to embrace the change. Keeping a positive attitude, recognizing others for their hard work and letting them know their valued can increase staff performance. The first thing that came to mind for me in this situation was how we can work smarter and not harder. With staff involvement, we re-evaluated our work flow and redefined some of the roles of nurses in our department for better utilization of time and nursing skills. The change was embraced and staff engagement in the new work flows have been
In the article “Addressing staffing shortages in an era of reform,” Stanford point out that in a time when change is necessary because of mandated healthcare requirements, there is a shortage of nurses in the field of direct patient care, because they are offered jobs with better pay to oversee office positions. “Health system leaders recognize that these shortages threaten the quality of care they can provide to patients. As a result, competition for talent is becoming more heated in several parts of the country,” (Stanford, 2013). By nurses taking on jobs in other areas of the field, we are left to find people to replace them and when that happens, it creates a shortage on the front line of patient care.
Thousands of nurses throughout the nation are exhausted and overwhelmed due to their heavy workload. The administrators do not staff the units properly; therefore, they give each nurse more patients to care for to compensate for the lack of staff. There are several reasons to why
For many years, the nursing shortage has been a relevant topic in today’s society. The nursing shortage is defined as a lack of trained nurses to provide care for ill individuals. Nursing schools inability to grow programs quickly enough to meet demands (Nursing Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014). The shortage is not only an issue in the United States but all over the world. This problem affects a wide range of people from current registered nurses, patients, and other members of the healthcare team. According to the Nursing Association of Colleges of Nursing (Rosseter, 2014), the nursing shortage is due to the expansion of healthcare and nurses who are baby boomers beginning to retire. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Employment reports,
In spite of the shortage among nurses, there are number of options and recommendations that can better help to maintain an adequate staff level and provide greater strategies needed to increase nursing. The choices open to cover for insufficient staff range from reallocating and postponing work, relocating staff within unit or from other units, to employing temporary additional nurses according to Buchan and Seccombe (1995). In health care, some of these options may not be available because ...
Do you enjoy paying medical bills? Healthcare accounts for about 1/6 of the entire economy, more than any other industry. Researchers find that the spending on health care totals about $2.5 trillion which is about 17.5% of America’s gross domestic product: a measure of the value of all goods and services produced in the United States (New Health Insurance).
