In Moliere’s Tartuffe, the most important male characters in the play (Orgon, and Tartuffe) appear to be good men to some. Orgon thinks that Tartuffe is a good man and even tries to make his daughter Mariane marry him. Everyone thinks that Orgon is a good person, when in reality he is not. Orgon is stupid and oblivious. He almost forced his daughter into marrying a creepy pervert who does not care about religion or morals. Tartuffe tries to have sex with Elmire, Orgon’s wife. He has no morals and does not care for others. Both of these men are misunderstood in that people think they are good. In these two characters, Moliere is mocking the gaps in other people’s judgement.
Although most people in the play think that Tartuffe is a bad person, Mme. Pernelle and Orgon both think he is good. Mme. Pernelle says, “he is a good man” and he “leads the way to heaven” (250). Tartuffe is so deceptive that he fools Mme. Pernelle, a …show more content…

Orgon used to be wise and smart; however since Tartuffe came around Orgon is not that way anymore. He is in a way under Tartuffe’s spell, because Tartuffe promises Orgon will go to heaven. In this way, Orgon kind of sees Tartuffe as God and is willing to do anything to get salvation. In Act 1, Dorine the maid even sees what is going on. She saw that Orgon used to be good, so she says, “During our civil wars [Orgon] showed good sense, and served with courage in his king’s defense; But since he’s taken Tartuffe as his hero, his sanity has been reduced to zero” (255). Although Dorine is a maid and is the least educated out of every character, she still can realize that Orgon is not a good person anymore. People just write off all his mistakes, but do not realize how huge the mistakes really are. He befriends Tartuffe, invites him into their home, tries to make him marry his daughter, gives his home and his money to Tartuffe, before realizing that Tartuffe is the exact opposite of what he originally
