It was believed from the beginning that Hawai’i is a place for paradise; where rest and relaxation can be found more than most places. It is ranked as the most peaceful place in the world. Hawai’i is alive now because of tourism and almost, if not all the residents of Hawai’i know about how the US illegally annexed Hawai’i by overthrowing their Queen. Many still stand with their belief that Hawaii should never be a part of the US because as people come to Hawaii, it is no longer the place that they would imagine it to be. Hawai’i is no longer a place to find solace but it is now a playground for the military. In the book edited by Craig Howes and Jon Osorio, it explains what most Hawaiians would want to say to the US. As he mentioned, “When one turns to listen for the sounds of protests, or looks for the idealists who dream of a fairer and compassionate society, less destructive of nature, one sees Hawaiians.” This is true considering the fact that a century passed by and still, people hear angry protests from Hawaii trying to claim their land back because of the fact that even United States itself ignored their own law.
In addition, the author looks to others point of view towards Hawaii and many believe that “it would be a better place if the Hawaiian movement is silenced.” They believe that if Hawaiians were to stay silent, then Hawaii would have an exponential increase in improvement but even those that say this, believe the fact that Hawai’i will no longer be Hawai’i.
Moreover, Hawaii has never been silenced. Their anger worsen once US made the Apology Bill, this made them submit the Native Hawaiian Reorganization Act in 1994 to allow natives to form their own government and also the sovereignty movement. The sovereignty movement helps us consider what we want our society to become. Although this is the case, Hawaiians’ control over this land is decreasing as the time goes by but as Osorio wrote that a movement would be fitting if all those that protest, remember the knowledge of their
