Unraveling the Secrets of Shakespeare’s Tragic Play: Romeo and Juliet “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo” (II.ii.36)? As the saying goes, “When in love, one must suffer.” In Shakespeare’s most favored tragedy of all time, Romeo and Juliet, the two star-crossed lovers are constantly controlled by fate. The usage of love and hate in Romeo and Juliet reveals how one must suffer when in love, on a similar note like how the two lovers are never able to meet each other at the end and the hardships they encounter for their love. But not only is love portrayed continuously in Shakespeare’s play, fate also symbolizes as a barrier for the cause of the two lovers’ consequent. When Juliet first knew that Romeo is a Montague, she exclaims, “My only love sprung from my only hate! / Too early seen unknown, and known too late” (I.v.152-153)! The repetition of the words love and hate proves how desperate Juliet is for the love of Romeo, but instead she suffers because of her own identity. Juliet is suffering from her identity because of who she is, a Capulet. As Shakespeare continues to write the play, he uses words such as love and hate to emphasize the strong relationship between the two feuding families. In addition, when Romeo is informed that he will be banished from Verona, he answers, “Be merciful, say ‘death,’ / for exile hath more terror in his look, / much more than death. Do not say ‘banishment’” (III.iii.13-15). Romeo is immensely heartbroken to which he chooses death instead of being exiled and banished from his own city of Verona because he will no longer be with his wife, Juliet. As the topic of death and hatred comes back again, Shakespeare presents to the reader that when in love, one must suffer from the consequences. Romeo and Juliet are used to portray that love is a hardship. At the end of the play, the reader has come to realize that fate perhaps is in the way of the two star-crossed
