Harry S. Truman Harry S. Truman was born on May 8th, 1884 on the farmlands of Lamar, Missouri. He was given the middle name of S because both of his grandfather’s first names started with the letter S. In 1890, the Truman family moved to Independence, Missouri, where Harry went to school and was a very smart student. (Generally speaking, paragraphs should be 4-5 sentences in length. On occasion, shorter lengths are okay.) Truman was always close to his mother whom he called “Mama” and came to her for everything. Even when Harry became President his mother was the first person he consulted when he was making big decisions. In his early years Harry had to wear thick glasses due to his vision being poor. As Harry got older he wished to attend the U.S Military Academy at West Point, but his poor eyesight prevented him from getting accepted. Truman’s family did not have much money causing him not to attend college, so after graduating high school in 1901 he worked as a bank clerk along with other jobs. Five years after graduating high school he spent over a decade working with his father on his family’s 600-acre farm near Grandview, Missouri. While working on his family’s farm, Truman served in the Missouri National Guard. In 1917, when America entered World War I, Truman was in his early thirties and reenlisted in the National Guard and was sent to France. In 1919 when he returned from the war, Truman married Elizabeth “Bess” Wallace, his childhood friend. The Trumans had one daughter, Mary. Mary grew up to be a singer and a writer of many novels. (mention the novels if you can) In 1922, Truman with the backing of Kansas City political boss Thomas Pendergast, was elected district judge in Jackson County, Missouri. In 1926, Harry wo... ... middle of paper ... ...he wrong way. He ordered that the eagles head be sewn on the right way. • Harry’s favorite food was steak. • In France he was Captain in Battery D. • Favorite Saying is “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” • Read the bible three times. • His first grade teacher was Myra Ewing, • Gave most of his speeches over the radio. Not many people think about past presidents unless their name is brought up in everyday life like George Washington for being our first President, or Abraham Lincoln for freeing the slaves. If you really think about it, Harry Truman did something that changed the world! He got the United States on track and made Japan surrender which is something that not many people in the world could do. He did just as much as any other president has done in the past. I think that people should recognize him just as much as any other president.
