Analysis of Morals and Values in Harry Potter
Good vs. Evil
At the heart of the story there is the fight of good against evil shown through the protagonist and antagonist. At the innermost personal level, there is the struggle between the characters Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. Harry is the epitome of good; while Voldemort is embodiment of evil. Harry is courageous, loyal, self-sacrificing, and a leader. This can be seen constantly as Harry puts himself in danger to protect others. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2007) after a scrimmage that leaves the Room of Requirement in flames, Harry makes sure to go back for Draco Malfoy and Gregory Goyle and saves their lives despite the harm these two classmates had caused him over the years.
His goodness is also shown in the third book when Sirius Black and Remus Lupin want to kill the man, Peter Pettigrew, that killed their best friend and Harry’s father, James Potter (Rowling, 1999). These two men want vengeance against Pettigrew for betraying Harry’s father but Harry stops them and reminds them that his father would not want his two best friends to turn into murderers. These dark wizards and witches were typically radical pure-blood supremacists and followers of Voldemort. They first appeared as a group in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2000) and they believed that only pure-blood wizards, that is wizards that came from soley magical families, should possess magic. They aimed to purify the magical race by eliminating those they saw as unworthy; the people who came from non-magical families. Their other main intention was the take over the government, the Ministry of Magic, and terrorize the land. Death Eaters were at Voldemort’s beck and call.
