INTRODUCTION Japanese festivals are traditional festive occasions. Some festivals have their roots in Chinese festivals centuries ago, but have undergone great changes because they mixed with local customs. The main festivals that will be held annually are Sapporo Snow Festival, Cherry Blossom Festival and Nebuta Festival. Malaysia is a country where one can experience a multitude of cultural celebrations as people here made up of three main races which are Malay, Chinese and Indian. For example, Malays celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese celebrate Chinese New Year and Indians celebrate Hari Deepavali.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated during the 9th month of the lunar calendar for a period of one month. It is also a time for Muslims to forgive and forget past quarrels. It is a five days festival usually held between October 13 and November 14. The festival is significant to all Hindus as it symbolises the triumph of good over evil as well as victory and hope over darkness and other challenges. Thus, Hindu homes and temples are adorned and beautifully-lit with colourful lights and oil lamps to ward off darkness and evil. In addition, open houses will be held and elaborate kolams or rangolis will be drawn outside their homes too.
