Hardware and software combined with several other devices work together to makes up a computer system. One part has little value without the other. The components need each other to fulfill their potential. The way the components interact allows people to use the computer to complete many different tasks (Ambrose, 2005, p. 58). The purpose of this assessment is to recognize computer system hardware components including devices that perform the functions of input, processing, data storage, and output. The document will briefly describe each of these functions and give examples of the device that perform them. Furthermore, it will mention and describe the different classes of computers as well as briefly describe two classes of software with …show more content…
They enable one to put data into the computer. Key board helps enter numeric and alphabetical data while the mouse controls the pointer on the screen. The central processing unit (CPU) is the brain of the computer. This processing device housed on a silicon chip contains switches and path ways that help the computer make important decisions (Beach, 2004). Data Storage Device and Output Devices To maintain a copy of data, one must store it on some type of storage medium. The floppy diskettes, hard drives, CDs, and flash memory cards are such data storage devices. The output devices display information. The common type of output devices are monitors and printers (Christensson, 2009). Classes of Computers Supercomputers and Microcomputers. Supercomputers are the largest and fastest computers. Government agencies and corporations with volumes of data to process use these computers. Microcomputers are used at domestic level and are generally classified by the operating system they use (Ambrose, 2005, p. 10). This explains that computers are classified by size, speed, and application. So, computers share the same basic
Softwares are instructions, commands, or data that direct the operation of computer systems. Hardware is the physical aspect of computers, telecommunications, and other devices. Hardware such as electronic circuitry and other components of a computer use software or programs to make technology do things. Hardware is permanent and not flexible, while software or programming can easily be varied and modified. You can put an entirely new program in the hardware and make it create an entirely new experience for the user. People can change the modular configurations that most computers come with by adding new adapters or cards that extend the computer's capabilities.
Not long ago computers were non-existent in many homes. When computers were first introduced to the world, they were for the sole purpose of performing business functions. The only people who owned computers were large organizations. Eventually, computers were introduced into the homes of those who could afford to buy them. Today, just about everyone owns some form of system that they use daily to help manage their day-to-day operations. What many once survived without now seems impossible to do without. As technology continues to grow, it has a greater effect on families and the education system. Some companies such as Microsoft and Apple made it possible to reinvent a new form of technology that would change the world. Each company had some form of struggle and overtime had to keep up with the changes of time and the way people communicated. From the first day of its invention, organizations have had to steadily implement new operating systems to keep up with the demands of the people while staying afloat with competitors. The ways of life for many have changed as well as the way people communicate. It is evident that the history and uses of computers have changed the world but these computers could not perform without the operating systems. Various operating systems will be discussed, how they began and how they each changed since they were first introduced. Although, they all had a purpose each varied in how they performed and changed the lives of many and will continue in the near future.
The invention of computers has made a huge change in human civilization and society, by changing the way people think. Computers replaced jobs and tedious repetitive thoughts that were done by human originally. People became more and more reliant on computers, and thus, computers became essential to our lives. Computers can manufacture products quickly, and eliminate possible human errors. As technology progresses, new ideas have been brought into computer to make them perform more efficiently. Also, scientists and engineers tend to make things “smaller”, so we can enjoy the benefits from electronic devices anywhere and anytime. Therefore, size and efficiency are two main points for consumers. Desktop computer and laptop computer are representatives for each of these concepts. Although desktops and laptops come from the same origin, they are different in many ways.
Computer hardware engineers research, develop, and test computer systems and components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, and many more (Bureau of Labor Statistics). They design new computer hardware, create blueprints of computer equipment to be built. Test the completed models of the computer hardware that they design. Update existing equipment so that it will work will new software. Oversee the manufacturing process for the computer hardware. Maintain knowledge of computer engineering trends and new technology(Bureau of Labor Statistics).
A desktop computer consists of a computer system unit, a keyboard, a mouse, and a monitor. These are also input devices which are the devices used to input data in the computer or used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system. The computer system unit is the enclosure for all the other main interior components of a computer. The primary function of the computer system unit is to hold all the other components together and protect the sensitive electronic parts from the outside elements.
Once upon a time, way back when in the caveman era, caveman used drawings on walls to keep track of information and to communicate with each other in the clan of one's life-span. Over time, man have improved and evolved in the way of keeping track of information and communicating with one another. Today, one finds himself more in an automated world than he did 25 years ago. When planning to purchase a computer, one must take in consideration all possibilities, options, and accessories that one could receive along with the computer. In this summary, we are going to examine some of the input, output, and storage devices along with speeds of a computer. Computers technology has a huge impact throughout our social world and economy. A computer is an electronic device that is used for storing and processing data for purposes of work (Forester, 1988). It helps operate work automatically for people. Multiple modifications and new build- INS in this technology have affected our environment and the way people use it today (Schoenherr). Computers started from the simplest technology to models that could perform increasingly complex tasks. It first started with the vacuum tube, then the transistor, next was the IC computer, the microprocessor, and overtime came the present and beyond which included the Apple Macintosh (Johnson, 2003).
Like what I say just now, hardware is the electronic and mechanical components of computer. Without the hardware, computer cannot function well. Some example of these components is input device, output devices, storage device, communication devices and a system unit (Gary B. Shellly 2012). Hardware is important for processing data in computer.
A CPU has various discrete units to help it in these tasks for example there is an arithmetic and logic unit(ALU) that takes care of all the math and logical data comparisons that need to performed. A control register makes sure everything happens in the right sequence. The motherboard is the main circuit board inside the PC. All other components are either slotted into or soldered to this board.
The hardware is everything physical, everything you can touch, everything you can damage by pouring water on it. It consists of the peripheral devices, thing that plug into the computer, like mice, keyboards, joysticks, and web cams. Web cams are used to capture video that the computer can store, or send over the internet so you can speak face to face with your family even though they are thousands of miles away. Some web cams can be used to track your movements and represent them real time on your
Computers are very complex and have many different uses. This makes for a very complex system of parts that work together to do what the user wants from the computer. The purpose of this paper is to explain a few main components of the computer. The components covered are going to be system units, Motherboards, Central Processing Units, and Memory. Many people are not familiar with these terms and their meaning. These components are commonly mistaken for one and other.
A computer is a combination of several parts. These parts are Random Access Memory (RAM), a Central Processing
Sadly, many people refuse to face the onslaught of computer technology. A 1994 survey conducted by Dell Computers indicated the 55% of Americans are phobic or resistant to computers (Column). In addition, many important people, including CEOÕs of major companies, are rumored to be computer illiterate (Column). The former CEO of IBM even admitted to never using a computer (Column). Fortunately, PC’s are becoming more and more user friendly as the technology improves. Fewer errors, less maintenance and quicker functioning should encourage many reluctant people to finally step into the new era.
The computer evolution has been an amazing one. There have been astonishing achievements in the computer industry, which dates back almost 2000 years. The earliest existence of the computer dates back to the first century, but the electronic computer has only been around for over a half-century. Throughout the last 40 years computers have changed drastically. They have greatly impacted the American lifestyle. A computer can be found in nearly every business and one out of every two households (Hall, 156). Our Society relies critically on computers for almost all of their daily operations and processes. Only once in a lifetime will a new invention like the computer come about.
Input is really important for the computer. Through this device, users are allows to enter data or instructions into a computer. It changed something on the screen through the response. There are many kinds of input device for users to select depending on their application to get the result they want. There are many input technologies, for example, keyboard, pointing device, trackball, touch screen, touchpads and audio input. These devices can help users to connect with computer system directly.
